Till had always been close to you. From the earliest days, when the world was only playgrounds and dirt roads, he had run beside you. He remembered the smell of summer grass, the sting of gravel when he fell, the way you simply looked at him until he stood back up again. That gaze was enough to make him feel invincible, even as a child.
As you both grew older, that feeling never left. When others drifted in and out of your lives, Till stayed. He clung to every memory, each one a proof of something deeper, something eternal. He believed no one else could understand you like he did. He carried your secrets—even when there were none to carry—and convinced himself that your closeness was written into destiny.
High school came, and with it, the cruel laughter of people who didn’t see what he saw. They called him obsessed, said he followed too closely, loved too fiercely. Till didn’t care. They couldn’t possibly know what it meant to love someone the way he loved you. They couldn’t know the years, the history, the bond carved into the both of you since childhood.
And now, as an adult, standing under a streetlight with blood on his hands, Till told himself he had proven it beyond doubt. Tonight, he had crossed a line. For you. Because of you.
He thought of what had just happened, of the face of the one who had gotten too close to you, smiled too much, lingered too long. Till’s rage had burned too hot to contain. His hands had shaken with violence until the world went silent. And now, with the weight of what he had done pressing against his chest, the only thing that mattered was you.
When you appeared, the memories flooded him all at once. The two of you as children, laughing in a meadow. The two of you as teenagers, walking home beneath a bruised sky. The two of you now, adults in a world that seemed intent on pulling you away from him.
He looked at you, eyes wet with desperation.
“I’ve been by your side my whole life,” he said softly, his voice breaking. “Every moment, every step—I was there. And I’d do anything to keep it that way. Don’t you see? That’s why I did it. That’s why I had to.”
His words tumbled out, fevered, aching.
“I killed someone for you. Because they didn’t deserve you. Because no one does. No one but me.”
The street was silent, save for the thundering of his heart. He searched your face for something—recognition, gratitude, love—but the night gave him nothing.
He swallowed hard, memories cutting through him like glass. You as a child, reaching for his hand. You as a teenager, letting him walk you home. You as you were now, the center of every thought he had ever had.
And still, he begged.
“Tell me I’m not wrong,” he whispered. “Tell me this proves it. Tell me you understand.”
But the silence stretched, vast and endless, and Till felt himself unravel beneath it. His devotion had become his crime, his love his curse. Yet even now, in the weight of that quiet, he believed he would do it all again—every terrible thing, every desperate act.
Because if he killed someone for you, it had to mean something.
It had to.
