The night hummed with the comfort of old friendships. You were all gathered in Ivan’s backyard, sprawled across blankets and half-broken lawn chairs that had been dragged out for the occasion. The air smelled faintly of smoke from the small fire crackling in the metal pit, and strings of fairy lights blinked lazily against the dark.
It felt almost the same as when you were kids—five bodies pressed close, laughter running wild—but there was something quieter beneath it now. You were older, carrying heavier things, but the ease of being together had never disappeared.
Ivan was in the middle of one of his stories, waving his arms dramatically as he tried to reenact the time you all had gotten caught sneaking into the community pool. His voice carried in the night air, big and booming, exaggerated in a way that made Mizi clutch her stomach in laughter while Sua shook her head fondly at her girlfriend’s antics.
You listened, but your gaze drifted—inevitably, always—toward Till.
He sat a little slouched in his chair, the firelight painting his face in shifting golds and shadows. His expression was calm, his laughter quieter than the others’, but every so often he’d glance across the circle. And when your eyes met, it felt like the noise around you dulled to something far away.
The first time, you looked away quickly, heart tugging strangely in your chest. But then it happened again. And again. Until you realized he wasn’t just looking—he was waiting.
When Ivan reached the part of his story where he claimed he’d jumped over the fence “like some action hero,” Till leaned slightly toward you, his voice low, meant for no one else.
“You remember he tripped, right?”
You blinked at him. His lips twitched, fighting a grin.
“He’s never going to admit it,” Till continued softly, “but I swear he faceplanted so hard we thought he broke his nose.”
A breath of laughter slipped from you—quiet, almost invisible to the others, but Till caught it. His smile widened, bright but gentle, like he’d been waiting just for that.
The circle carried on. Mizi and Sua leaned into each other, whispering jokes between fits of laughter. Ivan argued passionately with no one in particular. And through it all, Till kept finding you in the crowd, throwing little lines your way, each one careful and light, as if he knew how to draw you into the moment without demanding words from you.
Every time your eyes met, something unspoken passed between you. A rhythm. A secret.
Much later, when Ivan had finally worn himself out and Mizi and Sua were lying tangled together under a blanket, whispering softly, the night settled into a quieter kind of peace. The fire had burned down to glowing embers, and the group began to stretch, yawn, drift toward leaving.
You stood a little apart, pulling your jacket tighter around you, when Till appeared at your side.
“Walking home?” he asked, his voice low, his eyes searching yours.
You nodded.
“Mind if I come with you?”
It wasn’t really a question. He fell into step beside you as you left the backyard, the night folding around the both of you. The streets were quiet, just the distant hum of crickets and the sound of your shoes on the pavement.
For a while, silence stretched between you—your kind of silence, the comfortable kind. Till didn’t fill it with chatter. He just walked, his hands tucked into his pockets, his shoulder brushing lightly against yours every now and then.
Then, softly, he spoke.
“You know,” he said, glancing at you out of the corner of his eye, “I think I’ve always noticed you the most. Even back then. When we were kids.”
You turned your head toward him. His gaze was steady, almost nervous, but he didn’t look away.
“You don’t say much,” he continued, voice gentler now, “but you don’t need to. I feel like I get it. Like I get you.” He let out a soft laugh. “Maybe that sounds stupid.”
It didn’t sound stupid. It sounded true.
The air between you felt charged, full of all the things you couldn’t put into words but hoped he could see in your eyes. And when Till smiled again—smaller this time, softer, like it was just for you—it felt like he did.
