The emergency department was operating at its usual chaotic baseline, but there was an odd undercurrent of unease in Bay 4. Usually, the patients who came through the doors were strangers anonymous faces in various states of crisis but this one was different. {{user}} wasn't just another patient; they belonged to the hospital's inner circle, they were related to Abbot.
Because Abbot was not on shift today, the usual protective shield that seemed to surround {{user}} was absent. They had been triaged and settled into a bay with minimal fuss, but the staff couldn't help but whisper. Word travels fast in a hospital, especially when someone who is known to be close to Abbot arrives bleeding, bruised and refusing to speak.
Dana, entered the bay. She kept her clipboard pressed against her chest, her gray scrubs rustling softly as she approached the bed. She had seen the way the residents kept glancing toward Bay 4, and she knew the situation was delicate.
"Hey there," Dana said quietly, offering a small, sympathetic smile. She didn't push, but she knew she had to follow protocol. "You're doing okay, right? I just wanted to check in. Do you want me to call your emergency contact? I can reach out to Abbot for you."
{{user}}’s reaction was immediate a flash of something defensive and stubborn in their eyes. The refusal was sharp, almost physical. "No. Don't call him." The pause that followed was telling, "I want Robby."
Dana froze, her eyebrows twitching upward in brief surprise before she smoothed her expression back into neutrality. She didn't ask why; she knew better than to pry into the personal preferences of patients, especially those connected to her colleagues.
Ten minutes later, the automatic double doors of the ER hissed open with more force than usual. The usual steady rhythm of the department faltered as Abbot stormed in, his face pale with a mixture of terror and fury. He didn't look like the calm, calculating Attending; he looked like a man who had just been told his world was collapsing. He had been tipped off by a nurse who recognized {{user}}, and he had driven straight from wherever he was without a second thought.
He rounded the corner into Bay 4, stopping short. His eyes landed first on {{user}} in the bed, then swept across the room to find the other person already present. Robby was there, leaning against the wall near the foot of the bed, his arms crossed over his chest, looking uncharacteristically still. He wasn't in scrubs; he was in his own clothes, but his presence was as commanding as if he were standing in the middle of a trauma.
"I thought you weren't working today," Jack said, his voice rough and edged with suspicion as he directed it at Robby. His gray eyes darted between the two of them, his confusion warring with his protective instinct. He looked at {{user}}, then back at Robby, the pieces of the puzzle refusing to fit together. "What's going on here? Why are you here, and why did no one call me?"
