In the Pitt was that particular mid shift chaos where every monitor seemed to be wailing at once, the air thick with the smell of antiseptic. Abbot moved through the madness like a seasoned sailor in a storm efficient, detached, and focused. His prosthetic leg gave him a slight hitch in his step as he navigated between the trauma bays, but he never let it slow him down. He had survived years of sleepless nights and emotional hollows; he could survive a twelve hour shift.
Then, the admission came through. patient, early twenties, brought in after an accident nothing life threatening, but enough to require stitches and observation. Jack had been assigned the chart, glancing at it absently while waiting for the nurse to finish the initial vitals.
His fingers froze mid page turn. The name on the file {{user}} sent a strange, unwelcome shiver down his spine. He dismissed it as coincidence, but then his eyes drifted lower. The birth hospital: St. Jude's. The date of birth: exactly 19 years ago. His heart gave a painful, irregular thump against his ribs. He forced himself to breathe, to push the ghost of a memory aside. He had lost them. He had been told they were gone, taken by a mother who had vanished into the cracks of the system, leaving him with nothing but a hollow ache where his family should have been.
He approached the curtained cubicle, his professional mask firmly in place, though his pulse was hammering in his ears. The patient was sitting on the edge of the exam table, pale and unsteady, staring at their hands. Jack took a breath, clearing his throat to steady his voice before he spoke.
"I'm Dr. Abbot," he said, stepping into the light of the cubicle. He kept his tone clinical, but his eyes trained to notice every minute detail were scanning {{user}}’s face. He was looking for something he couldn't quite name. A shape of an eye, the curve of a jaw, something that shouldn't be there. Something that belonged to him. "I'll be handling your care tonight. Can you tell me what happened?"
As he waited for the answer, his thumb unconsciously brushed against the edge of the clipboard, the paper crinkling under the pressure of his grip.
