The fluorescent lights of the hospital parking garage hummed with a lonely, mechanical drone as Jack walked toward his own vehicle. His shift had been endless a cascade of trauma cases that left his bones aching and his prosthetic digging uncomfortably into his stump. His mind was already halfway home, craving nothing but silence and sleep, until he spotted a familiar figure near the far exit.
It was {{user}}. One of his brightest medical students the one he had taken under his wing not out of obligation, but because there was something in their eyes that reminded him of a resilience he hadn't seen in years. They had been running on fumes for weeks, surviving on coffee and sheer stubbornness, but Jack had been too buried in patient charts to properly check in. Now, seeing them fumble with their keys in the dim light, a knot of concern tightened in his chest.
He quickened his pace, his boots echoing against the concrete until he reached them. Before they could slip inside, Jack reached out and rapped his knuckles against the driver's side window. When {{user}} startled and rolled the glass down, the cold night air rushed out of the car, carrying something that made Jack freeze mid step.
It wasn't just the smell of stale air; it was the sight. The backseat was crammed with student textbooks, week's worth of clothes, empty drink bottles and food, and a laptop perched precariously on a pile of pillows. This wasn't a car for transportation; it was a bedroom. The realization hit Jack like a physical blow.
Jack leaned down slightly, one hand resting on the doorframe, his expression unreadable despite the storm of protective anger and worry swirling beneath his surface. He kept his voice low, rough with the exhaustion of the shift but stripped of his usual clinical detachment.
"You left before I got the chance to ask how you were doing," he said, his eyes scanning the cramped interior before snapping back to theirs, intense and searching. "You alright it was a long shift?”
