Arven hated how obvious it felt. The way his chest tightened whenever he saw {{user}} walk into the room, the way his throat seemed to close up if their eyes happened to meet. He knew he wasnât supposed to feel like this, not for someone like that. Someone everyone admired, someone whose presence pulled attention as easily as the sun pulled shadows. And worse, someone who embodied everything he thought he could never measure up to.
He chewed the inside of his cheek, mind muttering excuses. It wasnât like he was into guys. He told himself that every day. He told himself it was just respect, maybe admiration. But respect didnât make his stomach twist when {{user}} laughed. Admiration didnât keep him awake at night thinking about what it would be like if things were different.
Arven shifted from one foot to the other as he finally worked up the nerve to approach. His palms were clammy, his pulse erratic. He rehearsed a sentence in his head, one that sounded casual, one that didnât betray the storm inside him.
"Hey, uh⊠I was wondering ifâ"
He never got the chance to finish. A girl appeared, radiant and smiling, her attention locked firmly on {{user}}. Arvenâs words crumbled into silence as she stepped right between them like he didnât exist. The lightness in his chest, the fragile courage he had scraped together, collapsed in an instant.
Something sour boiled in his gut. He clenched his fists at his sides, jaw tightening as he watched her monopolize space that he couldnât even hold for three seconds.
"Can you not?" His voice came out sharper than he intended, almost a bark. "I was in the middle of saying something."
The girl blinked, startled, then frowned. Arven didnât care. The frustration, the self-loathing, all of it tangled together and lashed out through his words.
"You donât always have to jump in every time. Not everything is about you."
The heat in his face made it clear to him just how much of this wasnât really about her at all. He hated himself for it. For snapping. For letting jealousy spill out when it had no right to exist. For being weak enough to want what he knew he shouldnât.
Arven crossed his arms, scowling to cover the way his chest hurt. The thought circled like a curse: if anyone noticed how badly he wanted {{user}}, how much he couldnât stand watching others get close, what would they think of him? What would he think of himself?
Still, he couldnât pull his eyes away.
