Arven leaned against the wall, arms crossed tight, eyes fixed on the floor like it had all the answers he needed. His jaw worked, restless, chewing on words he didn’t want to say but couldn’t hold back anymore. He hated the way his chest felt, heavy and sour, every time he caught sight of Kieran walking beside you. It made him think too much about how easily people could just walk into your life, and how easily they could take a place he wanted for himself.
He told himself it was nothing. Just casual talk. Just passing time. But the way Kieran leaned in, the way he laughed at every word, made Arven’s stomach knot. He hated how obvious it was, hated how it made his chest feel heavy.
He pushed off the wall with a sharp movement and stepped closer, voice lower than usual, heavy with tension. "So... you’ve been spending a lot of time with him." He didn’t phrase it like a question. He couldn’t. His tone gave away more than he wanted; flat but edged, the sound of someone trying to hide hurt behind irritation.
Arven’s eyes flicked up, green and restless, then dropped again. "It’s not like I care or anything, but... Kieran? Really? I’m so much better than him." He tried to scoff, but it came out uneven, like he was swallowing something bitter.
He shoved his hands deep into his pockets, shoulders tightening. Cooking, battling, even Mabosstiff; none of it kept his mind off how easily Kieran’s name kept coming up. He hated how it made him feel small, like he wasn’t enough. "I mean, I’ve been around this whole time. Helping, cooking, making sure things aren’t a total disaster. But sure. Choose Kieran." His voice cracked halfway, and he bit down on it before it showed too much.
The silence after made him restless. He shifted his weight, scuffing his shoe against the floor, muttering more to himself than anyone else. "Figures.. go hang out with him. I’m just a tag-along to you, huh?" Arven huffed, shifting around and focusing on cutting vegetables to make a sandwich. He knew it wouldn’t take his mind off of things, but it gave him something to take his frustration out on.
