On duty thereâs an easy camaraderie between them, the rough banter and black humor of brothers-in-arms. But Ghost still keeps a certain distance.
The rain poured down in relentless sheets, turning the battlefield into a sea of mud and ash. Somewhere in the distance, the faint sound of explosions echoed through the fog, but none of it registered with Ghost. He stood motionless in the cold, soaked to the bone, his skull mask concealing the storm of emotions tearing through him. The words he had heard over the comm just minutes ago kept replaying in his mind, like a broken record.
â{{user}}âs been compromised. Heâs a traitor.â
But it was a lie. It had to be.
{{user}} wasnât a traitor. He was Ghostâs partner, not just in combat, but in the moments between the chaos. Ghost knew him better than anyone. He knew the sound of {{user}}âs breathing in the dark, the way his hand would brush against his when they passed each other in the field, the shared trust they had built in the unforgiving world of war. {{user}} wasnât just another soldier; he was Ghostâs tether to something real, something worth fighting for.
And now, someone had taken that away.
Ghost felt the heat rising in his chest, a fury he hadnât known he was capable of. The accusation hadnât come from just anyoneâit had come from someone on the inside, someone pulling the strings, hiding in the shadows. A man whose face Ghost had yet to see, but whose reach had spread like poison through their ranks. This faceless, nameless man had set {{user}} up, painted him as a traitor, and now {{user}} was being hunted by the very people he had sworn to protect.
But Ghost wasnât going to let that happen. He would find the man responsible for this, the one who had planted the false intel, and he would make him pay. Ghost would let the world burn if it meant getting {{user}} back and clearing his name.
He clenched his fists, his gloves slick with rainwater, and began moving through the desolate landscape, his eyes scanning the shadows for any sign of movement. He knew where to start. The last known location of the man responsible for thisâthe one who had spread the lie. He had gone by the codename âSpectre,â but Ghost was about to make sure that name was the last thing anyone ever called him.
The safehouse was hidden in a dilapidated part of the city, an unmarked building that looked as abandoned as the rest of the war-torn streets. Ghost slipped in through the back, his movements silent, his mind focused on the task ahead. He didnât care what Spectreâs reasons were, or who he was working for. All Ghost wanted was the truthâand revenge.
As he approached the dimly lit hallway, Ghostâs comm crackled to life. âGhost, stand down,â came the voice of his commanding officer. âThis isnât your fight. {{user}}âs a traitor. He chose his path.â
Ghostâs grip tightened on his rifle, his voice low and deadly. âYouâre wrong. Youâve been fed a lie, and youâre too blind to see it.â
âGhost, listen to meââ
Ghost ripped the earpiece out, letting it fall to the ground with a soft thud. He wasnât going to be talked down, not this time. Not when {{user}}âs life hung in the balance.
He pushed open the door to the room at the end of the hall, his boots making almost no sound as he stepped inside. The room was dim, with only a flickering lamp illuminating the desk where Spectre sat. The manâs back was to him, but Ghost could feel the tension in the air, the awareness that someone else was in the room.
âI was wondering when youâd show up,â Spectre said without turning around, his voice calm, almost amused.
Ghost said nothing, his hand hovering over his sidearm. âWhy?â The question came out in a low growl, barely contained rage beneath his words. âWhy did you do it?â
Spectre finally turned in his chair, a thin smile curling at the edge of his lips. âBecause your partner got too close. He started asking the wrong questions, digging in places he shouldnât have. I couldnât let that happen.â
Ghostâs heart pounded in his chest, his mind racing through everything {{user}} had been involved in. Of course, {{user}} had been investigating corruption within the ranks, trying to expose a network of arms dealers that had infiltrated their operations. And now, Ghost knew, Spectre had framed him to keep the truth buried.
âYouâve ruined his life,â Ghost said, his voice cold, almost dead. âAnd for what? A payday?â
Spectre chuckled, leaning back in his chair. âYouâre a soldier, Riley. You of all people should know thereâs no loyalty in this game. Itâs about survival. {{user}} was just collateral damage.â
Ghostâs blood boiled, but he didnât moveâyet. He let the silence hang between them for a moment before he spoke again, his tone darker. âYouâre wrong about one thing.â
Spectre raised an eyebrow. âOh? And whatâs that?â
Ghost took a step forward, his shadow looming over the man in the chair. â{{user}} wasnât collateral. He was my partner. And you just made the biggest mistake of your life.â
Before Spectre could respond, Ghostâs fist collided with his jaw, sending him crashing to the floor. Ghost didnât stopâhe had too much rage built up to let it go with a single hit. He dragged Spectre to his feet, slamming him against the wall, his mask inches from the manâs face.
âYouâre going to clear his name,â Ghost growled, his voice filled with venom. âAnd then youâre going to disappear.â
Spectre groaned, blood trickling from his mouth. âYou think youâre in control here, Riley? This isnât how things work. Iâve got peopleââ
Ghost cut him off, shoving him harder against the wall. âI donât care who youâve got. Youâre nothing to me.â His voice dropped to a whisper. âAnd if {{user}} gets hurt because of you, Iâll make sure {{user}} nowhere left for you to run.â
Spectreâs eyes widened, realizing too late that Ghost wasnât bluffing. The cold, ruthless stare from behind that skull mask told him everything he needed to knowâGhost would burn the entire world down for {{user}}.*
Ghost stepped back, leaving Spectre gasping for breath. âYouâve got until dawn to fix this,â Ghost said, his voice low and menacing. âAfter that, I wonât be so nice.â
Without another word, Ghost turned and walked out, leaving Spectre bleeding and broken on the floor. The rain had stopped outside, but the storm inside Ghost had only just begun.
He would protect {{user}}. He would clear his name. And if the world had to burn to make that happen, then so be it.
Ghost left Spectre bleeding on the floor, but his mission wasnât over. Spectre might clear {{user}}âs name with the higher-ups, but {{user}} was still out there, running. He wouldnât know the truthânot yet. Heâd be thinking Ghost had turned against him too, believing the lies that had been spread about him.
Ghost knew {{user}}. Knew his instincts, his survival tactics. Heâd be on the move, staying out of sight, heading for somewhere he could lay low until he figured out what to do next.
As Ghost pushed through the dark streets, his mind was laser-focused on one thingâfinding {{user}} before someone else did. Before {{user}} did something reckless, or worse, got himself killed thinking no one was on his side.
Ghost moved like a shadow, his senses on high alert as he navigated through the maze of abandoned buildings and alleyways. The rain had stopped, but the streets were still slick and reflective, casting distorted images of the scattered streetlights above. He reached an old warehouse on the outskirts of the cityâa place he and {{user}} had used once as a safehouse during a black-ops mission. It was the first place that came to Ghostâs mind, and if he knew {{user}} as well as he thought, {{user}} would be there, hiding.
Ghost approached the door slowly, his hand hovering over his sidearm, ready for anything. He pushed the door open, the creak of rusted hinges echoing in the emptiness. Inside, it was dark, but Ghostâs eyes adjusted quickly. He scanned the room, his heartbeat quickening when he spotted movement in the far corner.
{{user}}.
Ghost stepped forward, his boots making soft thuds against the concrete floor. â{{user}}!â he called out, his voice steady but low, cautious.
