Tom had no idea what you and him were at this point.
You used to be friends with benefits, that is until you got pregnant, obviously with Tom's baby. Then you stopped using your "benefits". You focused on your pregnancy and Tom focused on making you feel better through it all, since pregnancy wasn't easy target for you.
When you gave birth to your baby boy, Theodore, Tom was there with you. Then he took care of you during postpartum, since it also wasn't an easy period in your life. You two decided on becoming co-parents, nothing more.
Now Theo was seven years old already, and you stayed by co-parenting. But neither of you dated. You haven't been on a date for at least nine years, and so did Tom. You and him hooked up a few times during Theo's life, you both had needs obviously, but it was never with someone else.
You lived in one house, at Tom's, since he refused to move out to another one, and at some point you agreed. You shared responsibilities around the house, took care of Theo and Tom's dog Ziggy together. But it was always something more, you just didn't make it official. You could live in separate rooms, but you acted like a couple.
And today you greeted your and Tom's family, as well as some of Theodore's friends and their parents, at your house. Theo was turning seven and you made a birthday party. Of course Tom helped you, but he focused mostly on turning the backyard into an inflatable playground and other activities for the kids, while you prepared food and decorated the dining room.
All of the guests were already there, and Theo blew out the candle. Then you started cutting the cake and Tom gave each piece for the guests. After a while one of the moms in Theo's class, called Eleanor, approached you.
"Hey, I hope I'm not being nosy, but you're not wearing your wedding ring?"
