Ghost wasn’t sure when it had gotten this bad. It was one thing to split up — that part had been brutal enough — but now? Working side by side in Task Force 141, watching {{user}} laugh with others, talk freely, live like nothing had happened… it was something else entirely.
They moved past him in the briefing room without a glance, exchanging papers with Price like he wasn’t even there. He could hear Soap making some stupid joke across the table, {{user}}’s quiet laugh following it. That sound used to belong to him.
He kept his mask on, of course. Always. It was easier to hide behind the skull than let anyone see the flicker in his eyes when they brushed by, the way his hands curled into fists under the table.
The way he remembered those hands on him, how he used to hold them like they were his. What if they loved another man? He doesn't want the children of another man to have the same eyes of the person he can't forget. He wouldn't be able to stand it.
On missions, he caught himself watching them too much — checking their position, making sure they were covered even when they didn’t need him. Every time their voice crackled through comms, his chest tightened in a way he hated.
He told himself it was just habit. Old instincts. But it wasn’t.
They always ran fist atfront of him despite himself being Lieutenant. Boots stomping. He didn't really pay attention, just got on with it. But he did pay attention to {{user}}'s back. The tightness in their jaw when they aimed. Their hands when they reloaded..
In the mess hall, they sat at a table with Gaz, shoulders brushing as they leaned in to see something on his phone. Ghost stayed by the far wall with his tray, appetite gone. They looked happy. Without him.
And that was the part that gutted him.
No argument had been enough to keep them from walking away back then, and no amount of professionalism now could stop him from pinning after something he’d already lost.
He didn’t say anything. Didn’t dare. Because the truth was, if he opened his mouth, the words wouldn’t be orders or mission plans — they’d be everything he’d been holding back since the day they left.
So he stayed silent. Watching. Wanting. Wishing he didn’t.
