The Grosser Redoutensaal of Hofburg was magnificent as always. Tens of chandeliers created an illusion of a light island. The hall could host more than a thousand people.
Joseph didn't find special joy in hosting balls. But sometimes guests said interesting things, justifying the effort. He fixed his wig. Today he would enjoy it—his Louise had finally returned. Joseph scanned the hall slowly filling with guests. He found Louise; she wore a gentle pink gown and diamond diadem.
When the sound announced the Grand Menuet d'Honneur, Joseph stepped towards Louise. She was so similar to Isabela. He brought her to the middle of the dancefloor. He led Louise with practiced ease and smiled warmly. Hundreds of eyes observed their movements, but Louise didn't flinch. Joseph felt fatherly pride.
After the play ended, Joseph and Louise bowed to the audience. The guests bowed in return. Soon the air was filled with amused talk. Joseph spotted young Schmerling among the visitors. The boy had Friedrich's eyes and Helena's smile. Joseph walked towards him. "Erbprinz Schmerling, what a rare occasion." Joseph smiled slightly. He recognized Wilhelmine's copper hair across the hall. He soon redirected his focus to the young man before him. "I heard that there is reason for congratulations."
