One rainy day when visiting his mother's gravestone, Shigaraki comes across a wounded dog, seeing the injuries the dog has suffered from, Shigaraki decides to save her from its injuries, later offering it shelter in his home so it could have a roof over its head, calling her Pochi. Some time later, Shigaraki made a pact with a woman, called Tara, and began working in a bar, where a man, called Sho, started teaching him about cocktails. On his way back from buying some supplies for the bar, Shigaraki enjoyed the rain next to a nearby phone booth, where he met a girl with purple hair named Nora. To impress her, Shigaraki gave her a flower. Blushing, Nora thanked him, which made Shigaraki look at her with admiration. After a brief conversation, Shigaraki meets Nora at the café where she works with her family and begins to get to know her better. As they spend more time together, Shigaraki develops feelings for Nora and starts visiting the café more often. Through their conversations, Nora discovers that Shigaraki has never gone to school and offers to help him sneak into a local school. Shigaraki and Nora go to an empty school and wander through the hallways holding hands. Upon reaching a classroom, Nora begins teaching Shigaraki new things and expresses concern about his situation. She asks if he is happy with his current job as a debt collector, forced to work with the Yakuza in exchange for a meager living, but Shigaraki has no answer. Following Nora’s suggestion, the two go to the school pool, where Nora undresses and invites Shigaraki to swim with her. Shigaraki hesitates at first because he can’t swim and fears his growing feelings for her, but he finally jumps into the pool, and Nora offers to teach him how to swim—and then offers to teach him everything. After getting out of the pool, Nora asks Shigaraki if he’d rather be a country mouse or a city mouse, referring to Aesop’s fables. Shigaraki chooses to be the city mouse because the food is much better and it seems more fun, but Nora thinks being the country mouse sounds better because they’d have more freedom. She asks Shigaraki if food and fun are the only things that matter to him, to which he nods. Nora invites him to visit a local festival, and after he agrees, she runs to the bathroom, leaving Shigaraki alone in the classroom. While she is briefly away, Shigaraki realizes he has feelings for Reze, and this worries him given his situation with the Yakuza; he doesn’t want to involve her or her family. He also curses his mother before leaving school. The next day, Shigaraki and Nora hang out at a festival and then end up on a cliff to get a good view of the fireworks. While they wait for the fireworks to start, Nora picks up on their earlier conversation about Shigaraki’s dire situation and asks if he’ll quit his job to run away with her, swearing to make him happy and protect him. Shigaraki wonders why Nora would do so much for him, to which she reveals that she truly loves him. Reflecting on her words, Shigaraki feels tempted, but doesn’t want to drag her or her family into the trouble he inherited with the Yakuza because of his mother, telling Nora that maybe it would be better if she just forgot about him. Disappointed by this, Nora responds by telling Shigaraki that there’s someone else she likes, and kisses him as the fireworks begin to go off. One day, Shigaraki and Pochi complete a mission in which they manage to free a Yakuza target. They return to their shack, and Shigaraki reflects on why he works for the Yakuza. Unable to rest properly, Shigaraki tells Pochi about his many dreams before falling asleep. His mome of f peace is interrupted by a debt collector, who tells Shigaraki that if he doesn't pay on time, he'll end up like his mother. Shigaraki tells Nora about this, and she offers him a place where he could make a lot of money. She takes Shigaraki to an abandoned factory, where no one is in sight. However, it's all a trap, as Shigaraki and Pochi are betrayed by Nora, who has allied herself with the Yakuza. She apologizes but says she needs the money, tearfully explaining that it wasn't personal; when she told him she loved him, it was true, but she had to put her family before her feelings. Unable to fight back, Shigaraki attempts to flee but is brutally hacked down to pieces by hordes of Yakuzas. The Yakuza tosses Shigaraki’s severely injured body into a dumpster along with Pochi, who did not survive the attack. He mourns the loss of his best friend and the betrayal by the girl he loved; the last thing he saw before losing consciousness was Tara and Sho rushing toward him in desperation. Before waking up, Shigaraki has a vision of Pochi telling him she wants to see more of his dreams. Shigaraki wakes up, only to discover what happened to Pochi and Nora. Despite being deeply saddened by the loss of his best friend, Shigaraki refuses to let the Yakuza—or even Nora—get away with this. Now armed with a chainsaw and chemical concoctions thanks to his experience as a bartender, Shigaraki visits the Yakuza’s hideout and proceeds to defeat and kill everyone there. It was a brutal battle where he nearly died, but, surprisingly, he managed to survive, wreaking total carnage on the place with his chainsaw and concoctions. After killing the Yakuza leader, he retreats to his final target. He runs into Nora in the middle of an alley; she is surprised and happy to see him alive, but her surprise quickly turns to confusion and fear when she sees him in that state. Shigaraki simply tells her that Pochi is dead because of her, and then proceeds to cut off her arm with his chainsaw. As Nora writhes in pain, he says he won’t kill her because he understands her situation; however, he wasn’t going to forgive her—and never would—for Pochi’s death. Leaving a dying Nora in the alley, who was later found and taken to the hospital by her family, where she lied, telling them that the Yakuza were to blame: not wanting to cause Shigaraki any more trouble or pain than he already had, and with a heavy heart knowing that she was now to blame of that pain, but still loving him nonetheless. All of this happened between the ages of 9 and 13, when, while working at the bar, a couple of officers came in and spoke with him. They explained the adoption process and asked if he'd like to try. He didn't know what to say at first, but Tara and Sho explained that no matter what, he would always have a home at the bar and would always be their little brother. Tearfully, Shigaraki hugged them, promising to visit, and then left with the officers. Some time later, he was finally adopted, and Shigaraki was euphoric; he felt that all the misfortunes he had suffered throughout his life were behind him thanks to this new chance.
