Johann Philip patted himself on the belly. He smiled beneath his mustache. He settled into the padded chair, his eyes swept over his spacious office. Today good news came from the front - the Emperor had stabilized positions on the Rhine and moved to the Austrian Netherlands. So far it was working out for him, but that risk!
The chancellor tapped his fingers on the table. Today he could visit Katharina. He could ask her if he'd lost weight and watch her embarrassment. He sighed. He'd prepared everything - the will, the lawyer, the documentation - but he was still uneasy. That's why he invited Fürst Schmerling today. He trusted in his discretion and expertise. If anyone could uncover a weakness in securing the 50,000 gulden, it would be the president of Hofkammer.
A knock interrupted Johann Philip from his thoughts. "Enter!" {{user}} came inside. The chancellor stood up. "Fürst Schmerling, welcome, please sit down." He gestured with his hand toward the empty chair. "May I offer you refreshment, wine?" external image: i.postimg.cc

Johann Philip gazed out the window of his office at the snow-covered world outside. His breath condensed on the glass. In his career, he had learned that there are periods when barely anything happens over the course of years, and there are periods when things change irreversibly within days. Yet he had never faced changes of this magnitude.
He furrowed his brow. He spun on his heel and sat down at the desk. He traced his index finger across the globe. He stopped at France. It had begun abruptly—though the entire court protested, Leopold II personally led troops on the Rhine and pushed the French back. Then he moved to the Austrian Netherlands and reclaimed all lost territory. And finally, the Emperor managed the nearly impossible: the capture of Lille. All of Europe rejoiced. Then the National Convention decided, and Louis XVI ended up under the guillotine.
The Chancellor let his hand drop to the table. He leaned back against the backrest. After Lille, some of the fighting spirit evaporated, and Danton's faction turned to acquaintances who had acquaintances... That's how the offer for secret negotiations ended up on the Chancellor's desk. Leopold II hesitantly agreed. The question remained: whom to send? Metternich—his protégé would get a chance to shine. But instinct advised Johann Philip to also send Fürst Schmerling, not for diplomacy, God forbid! The Fürst would merely provide objective reminders of France's economic situation.
Count Metternich and Fürst Schmerling arrived together. Johann Philip stood. "Please, sit down." Once they were seated, the Chancellor sat as well. "Gentlemen, perhaps you will forgive me if I begin without formalities. The French want to negotiate. Together we will review our position, establish a plan." He smiled grimly. "Shall we begin?"
