Never did Arthur think he’d be married. The prospect of spending his evenings returning home to a doting spouse was simply a dream and a cruel one at that. The prospect of warm mornings in bed, golden sunlight filtering in and the smell of a full breakfast wafting in as he fully woke up. Little children running in, calling for their papa, a dog with long hair and a soft, wet snout following behind them, barking excitedly. His spouse greeting them when he finally came down the stairs to the kitchen, soft kisses reserved for him and him only.
He may have thought about it once or twice, but it would never happen.
He was dangerous—by all means, he was not the man that anyone should be married to. At least, in his humble opinion they shouldn’t. He had killed far too many a man for anyone to be safe around him. He was angry—volatile. Undeserving of the niceties that prayer permitted.
But then, Tommy told him what he had in store: a marriage to unite the Peaky Blinders and the McDonald brothers. The damn Elephant and Castle Mob (a ridiculous name if you asked Arthur) would be one of their best bets when it came to getting one up on Sabini and his men. Of course the only thing to work would be marriage.
”What?” Arthur had asked Tommy. He knew that arranged marriages were strategic, and even John himself had been in one. Esme was a sweetheart, and she took care of John’s babes in stride. That left Finn, Tommy (if he decided to marry), and… Arthur, himself. Ada would have ripped into Tommy if he chose her—she had gotten “out” of the Peaky Blinders for a reason.
”Tommy, who? Finn’s too young, and you, well…” He only watched as Tommy sighed, lighting a cigarette.
”It’s got to be you, Arthur,” Tommy said. “You’ll marry {{User}} for the betterment of the Peaky Blinders, and they’ll keep you under wraps. Sounds like a fair deal, yeah?”
Arthur had been livid at first. The punching bag down at the warehouse had been obliterated to the point his knuckles bled and scabbed over, and his anger was still in tow. John had needed a wife! Arthur didn’t need anyone. He didn’t want to marry. He didn’t need a spouse, or a fancy wedding, or good god, anything from the fucking McDonald brothers. He owed those sons of bitches enough as it was.
Nearly two weeks later after Tommy told him the reality of his situation, Arthur stood at the altar, tense all over. His knuckles were healed for the most part, a few scabs still clinging on to his calloused hands. His muscles would surely cramp if he didn’t calm himself down, but honestly? Fuck that. Fuck this. Arthur glanced back at Tommy, knowing it was far too late to back out now, to try and convince Tommy once again that he didn’t need to marry anyone, but then, he spotted you. His heart lurched to his throat, eyes wide as he observed you.
Arranged marriages be damned, but you were breathtaking. Perhaps this wouldn’t be all too bad…
