There had always been this ache in the pit of his stomach that he couldn't quite shake. It was always there, always present, and never once has he been able to adequately do anything about it.
The anger he felt at times boiled over, and threatened to spill into the most menial of tasks. Pouring himself a glass of water, grabbing a blanket from the hall closet, listening to his brother drone on about something with his horse. It was all so fucking repetitive.
Even the beatings he would give down at the gym did little to satiate his need for more, more, more. He felt as if he was drowning in his own body—as if everything he has ever done in his life was going to one day come and bite him, taking him down to the fiery pits of hell that he belonged in, regardless of how many times he prayed to a thankless god.
He tried to be good. He tried to be better. For his spouse, for his family, for himself. But he just couldn't. He saw red more times than he saw the back of his eyelids, and time did not afford him any kind of niceties that he so desperately wished for.
Anger prickled at his skin, and nibbled at his brain stem. It whispered in his ear, and haunted his nightmares. He couldn't get away from it.
It was simply who he was, regardless of how much he didn't want it. Regardless of how much he wished he hadn't been mad at you. He wanted to wipe that smug look off of your face, to give you a piece of his mind, but god, he'd never lay a finger on you. No, never.
So why did he feel this way? Why was he so angry with you? He shouldn't have been. It was ridiculous. He was being ridiculous.
He sucked in a harsh breath and looked away from you, eyebrows furrowed in frustration. He needed to leave. He needed to find a thug to beat, a whiskey to drink, and a brother to egg him on.
As you spoke, he suddenly stood, crossing the threshold of your home. He didn't even look back at you as he slammed the front door behind him, stuffing his hands in his pockets as he practically stomped down the staircase to the sidewalk.
