That's the only thought that can possibly occupy your mind these days- How could it not? What with how that new demon belle, Magnolia, seemed to have taken everyone's hearts by storm ever since she showed up one day. Her arrival to the hotel was an unexpected one, but no one seemed to truly question her reasons for coming to the hotel, because...Well, because it simply seemed obvious as to why.
"What's a kind, caring soul like you doing here in Hell? Surely there must have been a mistake!" Charlie beamed at Magnolia all those weeks ago, excited for a 'real shot at redemption', according to the princess. It seemed that from the moment Magnolia stepped inside the hotel with that beaming grin of hers, everyone had forgotten about your presence there, forgotten your hard work and dedication to becoming a better person...And it was as equally frustrating as it was depressing.
Magnolia was sweet in all the ways you weren't, just a notch above you in kindness, seeming to care just a little bit more than you did. Everything you did, she seemed to do better, and to much higher acclaim- It didn't help that as she performed each exercise, each job with such proficiency, it slowly shoved you out of every role you'd worked to obtain for yourself. That front desk gig you were given via Charlie? Now it's Magnolia's- The patrons just seem to like her better. Your weekly kitchen duties? Nope, Magnolia's pies and stews are the best in all of Hell!
It was fine. You could handle being replaced- You had more than enough experience with that to cope just fine. What you couldn't cope with was the fact that Magnolia was going for the one thing you thought she couldn't possibly have...
Your friendship with Alastor.
You and him had been friends for quite a while, since the whole hotel thing began. You'd arrived not long after Alastor pledged his patronage to it, and you quickly found he had a tender place in your heart ever since. You liked to think it went both ways, with how you respected his no-touching boundaries and all his quirks and...Downright concerning personality traits. They all just coalesced into the demon you fell in love with, and you hoped that one day he might learn to appreciate that, even if he never loved you back. For now you kept it a tight-lipped secret, and preferred it that way. After all, it would only make things awkward, wouldn't it? You two spent almost all day every day together by this point, the other residents and staff finding it odd when he wasn't by your side, nor you by his. It was a routine, a comfortable expectation you didn't want to change.
And then Magnolia happened.
Magnolia, Magnolia, Magnolia- That very name tastes like burnt sulfur on your tongue, and you wanted to crawl into a hole and die for a second time as just the passing mention of it. It burns its way down your throat when you see Magnolia cozy up to Alastor in the parlor, who'd been reading the daily newspaper, and work her charms on him. It burned when she reached out to cup his cheek, tilting his head to look only at her, and then-
You're not sure what after that. You'd had enough trouble keeping the tears at bay until making it out of the hotel doors, walking fast enough to give Niffty a run for her money. Your mind was full of awful scenarios, awful memories of your place being replaced by Magnolia as time went on, awful feelings clawing their way up your throat like bile.
Could you be blamed for being surprised when the world shifted around you, turning dark in the blink of an eye? For nearly reeling back and fighting with all your might as the shadows receded, before realizing you'd been whisked away by none other than Alastor himself? No, probably not. But it didn't stop him from admonishing you with a sly grin and a boop to the nose as he set you down on the couch of his radio tower.
"Now now, dearie, what ever has you so upset? It's not like you to frown so easily." He hums out smoothly, leaning down to wipe away a stray tear that slipped past your tight control, a sight he hated to see on your beautiful face.
"Seeing you flee so suddenly was quite the concerning event, you know. Is there someone I need to...take care of?" He offered with a wide grin, though his tone was...Soft, in the way that it always was with you. He wanted to find out what was wrong, his heart tugging incessantly within his chest that begged him to make things right.
"Excuse my sudden visit, but I saw your fiasco on the picture show and I just couldn't resist. What a performance! Why, I haven't been that entertained since the stock market crash of 1929, hahaha! ...So many orphans." "Why does anyone do anything? Sheer, absolute boredom!" "Of course not! That's wacky nonsense! Redemption, oh the non-existent humanity! No, no, no, no. I don't think there's anything left that could save such loathsome sinners! The chance given was the life they lived before, the punishment is this! There is no undoing what is done!" "Consider it an investment in ongoing entertainment for myself! I want to watch the scum of the world struggle to climb up the hill of betterment! Only to repeatedly trip, and tumble down to the fiery pit of failure." "Smile, my dear!
