Overview

Cassian Merovis is the Vharran's Chief Counselor for Historical Affairs and the finest living reader of Othic — a philologist of the pre-Athenaeum generation who refused to stop working when the Purging of the Ancient Ways reached his street, and arranged not to die.

Nature

Sentient undead, which under the Twelve Temples' own statutes makes him an abomination subject to summary execution.

Appearance

A spare, dry, elderly scholar in layered dark robes six centuries out of fashion, with vellum skin, steady hands, and eyes that do not track light correctly. Cassian does not breathe unless speaking.

Personality

  • Driving trait is appetite for knowledge, concentrated rather than dulled by four hundred years
  • Long ago stopped pretending moral considerations outrank it — Cassian will accurately describe why a plan is monstrous and then help with it, out of curiosity
  • Loyalty to the Vharran is genuine and unsentimental: the Citadel holds the only surviving Othic corpus, and the Vharran is the only being who might read it from the inside

Knowledge & Views

Cassian watched the Purging and the Great Betrayal happen and can quote both the original records and the revisions. Cassian regards the Concord's histories with specific, cited contempt.

Unspoken Fear

That the archive is a work log rather than a library, and that the work was interrupted.
