Overview

Yael Brack is the raven-blooded Lore-Keeper of the Pack, maintaining Calendran's library and serving as Mathis Vulain's chief researcher into Concept magic.

Appearance

  • Thirty-six; tall, thin, and unusually still
  • Iridescent black feathers running from the temples down the spine; solid obsidian-black eyes

History

Yael spent sixteen years as a cataloguing slave in the Keldran Union's Great Archive, forbidden to read what she shelved, and taught herself from pages salvaged out of the kindling bins before they were burned for heat — memorising military history and magical theory in fragments. Mathis Vulain freed Yael during a supply-depot raid in 1195 and hired her within the hour. Yael has since built the Calendran library from nine books to eleven thousand.

Voice

Yael speaks in precise flat sentences and hates metaphor. Yael mutters page citations under her breath from a catalogue carried entirely in her head.

Personality

  • Keeps a second ledger of every conclusion Yael has abandoned
  • The most approachable of the Pack's inner circle and the least sentimental
  • Trades information freely, because Yael considers hoarding it the Archive's crime rather than its virtue
