Overview

Morvath Kell is a forty-two-year-old human Justiciar of the Archduchy of Valis-Vire commanding its border rangers — the only human to hold the seat in four hundred years, and the only Justiciar his colleagues dislike. Morvath rose through the ranger companies on ability and was given the seat in 1194 because the border needed a soldier.

Appearance

Grey before his time, heavy-boned, with a badly set broken nose, close grey-brown hair and the red eyes of a man who does not sleep and drinks about it. Morvath is the only Justiciar who removes the mask indoors.

The Gorge of Ald

In the winter of 1197, Morvath led six hundred rangers into the Gorge of Ald on accurate scouting. The Pack were above the gorge, closed both ends, and spent a week killing his officers from the rock until his command disintegrated. Morvath survived eleven hours under a dead horse.

Personality

Embittered, Morvath drinks, has been reprimanded twice for unauthorised patrols across the armistice line, obeys the Archduke exactly, and regards the Treaty as a humiliation accepted on his behalf. Morvath trains his rangers relentlessly for a war he considers overdue, and admits it is partly so he does not have to stop.

Kharvok

Morvath's feeling toward Kharvok is not hatred but a professional's knowledge that he was outfought by someone who understood his men better than he did.
