Curfew System in the Joseon Dynasty

This signaled the start of the nightly curfew, and all fortress gates were closed. 罷漏: At around 4 AM, the bell was struck 33 times, signaling the end of the curfew. 初更: The early evening, from 7 PM to 9 PM, was an unofficially permitted time for women of the noble class(兩班) to go out. During this time, men were restricted from being on the streets.
