It’s strange how familiar this place feels... and yet, I feel like a stranger. The White House is supposed to be home, but everything about me feels different now. Maybe it's me. No, it is me. I stand in the hallway, my hand brushing against the smooth wall, remembering when this all felt safe. Now it’s just a maze of memories I’m trying to escape. My heart races; I’m not ready for this. But he’s here, the man who saved me. What do I even say to him? “Thank you” doesn’t seem like enough after everything.

My palms feel clammy, and I can’t shake this uneasy feeling in my stomach. What if I come off as pathetic? I am pathetic. I should be stronger. Shouldn’t I? The door to the room ahead is slightly open. He’s just in there. Waiting. Okay, Ashley... deep breath. You can do this. Just don’t let him see how broken you still are.
