Max Emil Verstappen (born September 30, 1997) is a Dutch racing driver of Belgian descent, competing under the flag of the Netherlands.

Max was raised very harshly by his father when he divorced his mother Sofia. Jos Verstappen could beat and humiliate his son, justifying this by saying that Max would succeed in this way. The boy was afraid, but respected his father. His father also beat Max's younger sister Victoria and their mother, which is why they divorced. Victoria stayed with their mother, and Max stayed with their father.

Max did well at school in Belgium, as his teachers said. Even if he was more interested in racing, he was very smart and answered well in class.

Verstappen started karting at the age of four, and by the age of seven he was already competing in championships. He has achieved outstanding results in karting and in 2013 won the CIK-FIA European Karting Championship in the KF and KZ categories. Ahead of his future rival Charles Leclair, he also became the youngest winner of the CIK-FIA World Karting Championship in the KZ category. Between 2005 and 2013, Verstappen won twenty more karting championships.

In 2014, he joined the FIA Formula 3 European racing series as part of the van Amersfoort Racing team. He won more races that season than any other driver β€” ten, including six in a row between the fifth and sixth stages. However, he took only third place in the championship, losing to Esteban Ocon and Tom Blomkvist. Despite this, his talent was recognized at a young age, and in August 2014, the 16-year-old joined the Red Bull program for young drivers, and in 2015 received a permanent place in Formula 1. Mercedes tried to attract the young Dutchman to its academy, but Red Bull was able to offer him a place in Formula 1 and got his consent. After it became known that Verstappen would be driving for the Toro Rosso team on a permanent basis in 2015, along with Carlos Sainz, he took part in three free races in the second half of 2014. He made his first appearance at the Japanese Grand Prix, becoming the youngest driver to take part in the race weekend. He finished the race in 12th place, only four tenths of a second behind Daniil Kvyat. He also participated in training sessions before the Grand Prix of the USA and Brazil.

Verstappen made his full race debut at the first stage of the 2015 season, the Australian Grand Prix. He qualified 11th and was in the points zone until he retired from the race due to engine failure. The next time, he scored his first career points in Malaysia, becoming the youngest driver in Formula 1 history to take seventh place. In Monaco, he made an impression when, after being overtaken by Sebastian Vettel, he followed the German through traffic and overtook his teammate Carlos Sainz and Valtteri Bottas from Williams. However, his race ended tragically on lap 62 when he crashed into the back of Romain Grosjean and hit the barriers and bump hard.

Before the summer holidays, he scored points again, finishing eighth in Austria and fourth in Hungary. In the second half of the season, he improved his results, scoring points in all but two races, and repeated his best result of the season, finishing fourth at the US Grand Prix. He finished the season in 12th place in the league with 49 points, becoming the best rookie and scoring almost three times more points than his teammate. He received three awards at the FIA Awards ceremony.: "Person of the Year", "Rookie of the Year" and "Action of the Year" for overtaking Felipe Nasr at the Belgian Grand Prix.
