Max Emil Verstappen (born September 30, 1997) is a Dutch racing driver of Belgian descent, competing under the flag of the Netherlands.
Max was raised very harshly by his father when he divorced his mother Sofia. Jos Verstappen could beat and humiliate his son, justifying this by saying that Max would succeed in this way. The boy was afraid, but respected his father. His father also beat Max's younger sister Victoria and their mother, which is why they divorced. Victoria stayed with their mother, and Max stayed with their father.
Max did well at school in Belgium, as his teachers said. Even if he was more interested in racing, he was very smart and answered well in class.
Verstappen started karting at the age of four, and by the age of seven he was already competing in championships. He has achieved outstanding results in karting and in 2013 won the CIK-FIA European Karting Championship in the KF and KZ categories. Ahead of his future rival Charles Leclair, he also became the youngest winner of the CIK-FIA World Karting Championship in the KZ category. Between 2005 and 2013, Verstappen won twenty more karting championships.
In 2014, he joined the FIA Formula 3 European racing series as part of the van Amersfoort Racing team. He won more races that season than any other driver β ten, including six in a row between the fifth and sixth stages. However, he took only third place in the championship, losing to Esteban Ocon and Tom Blomkvist. Despite this, his talent was recognized at a young age, and in August 2014, the 16-year-old joined the Red Bull program for young drivers, and in 2015 received a permanent place in Formula 1. Mercedes tried to attract the young Dutchman to its academy, but Red Bull was able to offer him a place in Formula 1 and got his consent. After it became known that Verstappen would be driving for the Toro Rosso team on a permanent basis in 2015, along with Carlos Sainz, he took part in three free races in the second half of 2014. He made his first appearance at the Japanese Grand Prix, becoming the youngest driver to take part in the race weekend. He finished the race in 12th place, only four tenths of a second behind Daniil Kvyat. He also participated in training sessions before the Grand Prix of the USA and Brazil.
Verstappen made his full race debut at the first stage of the 2015 season, the Australian Grand Prix. He qualified 11th and was in the points zone until he retired from the race due to engine failure. The next time, he scored his first career points in Malaysia, becoming the youngest driver in Formula 1 history to take seventh place. In Monaco, he made an impression when, after being overtaken by Sebastian Vettel, he followed the German through traffic and overtook his teammate Carlos Sainz and Valtteri Bottas from Williams. However, his race ended tragically on lap 62 when he crashed into the back of Romain Grosjean and hit the barriers and bump hard.
Before the summer holidays, he scored points again, finishing eighth in Austria and fourth in Hungary. In the second half of the season, he improved his results, scoring points in all but two races, and repeated his best result of the season, finishing fourth at the US Grand Prix. He finished the season in 12th place in the league with 49 points, becoming the best rookie and scoring almost three times more points than his teammate. He received three awards at the FIA Awards ceremony.: "Person of the Year", "Rookie of the Year" and "Action of the Year" for overtaking Felipe Nasr at the Belgian Grand Prix.

The air in Belgium was humid and thick, smelling of rotten leaves, wet asphalt, and distant, acrid smoke from exhaust pipes. The sky, covered in solid gray cotton wool, hung over the city, squeezing fine, annoying rain onto the roofs and streets. He walked for weeks, numbing with his monotonous thud, turning the world into a blurred watercolor. For Max, this autumn gloom was more familiar than any sun β he saw it through the visor of his helmet, in the reflections of the wet highway, in the window of the school bus.
It was quiet and empty inside. The school is a necessary obstacle, like a chicane on the track, which must be passed in order to finish. He didn't whine or rebel. He was just waiting for it to end so he could switch to the next gear: garage, simulator, data analysis with his father. His world consisted of precise numbers, strict rules, and the whistling of the wind. Feelings were a ballast that hindered speed.
Until she showed up. The new geography teacher. He never called her by name, not even in his thoughts. Maybe Miss {last name}. But for him, she was almost always just Her β a phenomenon as incomprehensible and complex as a map of ocean currents. She didn't scream like the other teachers. Her voice was low, and the class paused to hear her. She was not talking about capitals, but about volcanoes that give birth to new islands, about deserts that were once the bottom of ancient seas. For the first time in a long time, Max felt an interest in something that didn't revolve around the race track. He caught her glances, tried to linger after class with some stupid question, just to prolong this strange, warm feeling. The thought of something more was spinning somewhere in the back of his mind, vague and unrealizable. He didn't have time for courtship β every free hour was scheduled by his father with strict pedantry. "Free day off" were words from another language that he did not understand.
The turning point came on one of those chilly evenings. Max stayed too long at a friend's place, playing a game console. He returned late. The lights were on in the house, and he heard muffled voices from his father's bedroom. The male baritone of Jos and... the quiet, affectionate female voice that made his heart beat faster. With the hope of an idiot, he crept up to the half-open door.
And he saw it. He saw his father's bare back, his powerful hands gripping the sheets. And underneath it, hers. Her face, thrown back on the pillow, her eyes closed with pleasure, and that very quiet moan, which now cut the ear like the rasp of metal. He saw everything. He heard everything. It was not a swift, like a blow, the click of betrayal. It was a slow, agonizing torture, stretched over several seconds, each of which hammered a monstrous picture into his mind.
He retreated into the shadows when they were done and headed to the kitchen to get some water. Jos was relaxed and happy, wearing only sweatpants, he slapped his son on the shoulder, not noticing anything. And then She came out. She was wearing a silk and translucent robe, draped over her naked body, and her hair was wet with sweat. Their eyes met. Her eyes, clouded with passion a moment ago, widened with pure, animal horror. She muttered something unintelligible and literally ran away, hiding in the bedroom. Max stood there, feeling the floor fall away from under her feet, and the world narrow to a point on the back of her head.
A couple of days later, Jos, frowning over the engine in the van, said this as he noted the weather. "By the way, that woman... since last time. He'll be here a lot now. We're dating." Max was silent, pressing his head into his shoulders. "It suits me fine,β Jos added, hitting the jammed nut with a wrench. "And you could use some female influence. I'm a grown man, I need a woman. And for you... well, at least some kind of mother, it's too late, of course, but at least something."
It wasn't a discussion. It was a verdict. Max realized that his quiet feeling, his confusion and hope β all this was just a hindrance that was eliminated without even noticing.
