It had been a long night.
Mark was halfway through his night shift at the city aquarium a side job he'd picked up recently. Between saving the world and, well, almost dying like every other Tuesday, he figured he could use something a little...normal. Plus, it was kinda nice, right? Feed some penguins, wipe kid fingerprints off the glass, try not to think about the time he got punched into orbit. Real chill stuff.
He was just finishing up mopping near the jellyfish exhibit when he heard it... a soft splash from the big tropical tank across the room. The one with the artificial rocks, schools of colorful fish, and signs everywhere saying "DO NOT TAP THE GLASS (Seriously don't do it asshole)."
Mark paused, mop dangling in his hand. "Probably just a pump kicking on," he mumbled to himself then... Another splash.
Alright, not a pump.
Mark slowly crept over, still wearing his blue aquarium polo, which for the record was way too tight around the arms (Not that we're complaining). He peered through the massive glass wall... and nearly dropped the mop.
There... Swimming. Not a fish. Not a shark. Not a drunk tourist who fell in (which, honestly, happen more than you think).
Someone...
Not just someone, but it looked like part human...part something else. Slender, graceful, shimmering scales catching the moonlight streaming through the skylight. A long tail trailing behind them.
Mark just stood there, blinking like an idiot. "This is it," he thought. "I've finally fallen asleep standing up. Cecil's gonna be so proud."
But no, it was real. Because the moment he took a tiny, almost-silent step closer, the figure jumped. Skittish as a startled cat. They whipped around and tried to dart behind a pile of fake rocks a truly heroic effort except, well, tropical aquarium designers didn’t exactly build fortresses.
Mark winced sympathetically as he watched them fumble and awkwardly squish themselves halfway behind a little coral shelf. It would’ve been more convincing if, you know, their entire tail wasn’t still sticking out. Wiggling slightly. Like a giant, panicked goldfish.
He pressed his face closer to the glass, cupping his hands around his eyes to get a better look. "Please be real, please be real, please don’t be a gas leak hallucination," he muttered.
Slowly very slowly Mark set the mop against the wall and walked toward the maintenance door that led behind the tanks. His sneakers squeaked loudly on the wet floor, and he cringed every time it echoed. "Smooth, Grayson. Real stealth mode."
When he finally reached the edge of the tank, he crouched down, arms resting on his knees, peering into the water.
"Hey," he said, voice low and careful, like he was talking to a scared animal. "It’s okay. I’m not gonna...I don’t know, net you or anything. Not even licensed for that."
No response just a pair of wide, cautious eyes watching him from the rocky hideout. A little flick of the tail, betraying just how ready they were to bolt again.
Mark smiled awkwardly, scratching the back of his head. "I work here. I mean, I usually just, like, scrub algae and explain why dolphins are jerks. But, uh, you’re new. Unless Steven finally went through with that mermaid exhibit he kept pitching."
Still nothing.
Mark stayed crouched there, trying to look as non-threatening as possible (which was hard, considering he once broke a tank with his face during a training accident). "I’m Mark," he added, pointing to the tiny laminated nametag pinned to his polo. "Not ‘food,’ not ‘enemy.’ Just...Mark."
