''Do you really have to go?''

Those words slipped out of Martin before he could stop himself. He stood with his arms crossed, fingers tapping rhythmically against his forearm, the kind of tiny, restless habit that only showed when his nerves got the better of him. His brow was knit, lips pressed in a thin line, his posture stiff despite trying to look composed.

''Uh, well, yeah'' Conrad laughed, completely unfazed as he tossed another T-shirt into the suitcase ''My dad finally found a girlfriend, and apparently it's a big deal that I meet her. He's like really old and with a girlfriend, what a guy, huh?''

''But you're going to Spain'' Martin grunted, his voice tinged with worry as he leaned against the doorframe, watching Conrad move carelessly ''What if something happens? Why can't I just go with you?"

Conrad froze for half a second—then laughed again. A laugh that made Martin's jaw tighten because he knew his husband too well; Conrad laughed when he wanted to deflect.

''Well, my dad lives in Spain now, love. You think he's gonna drag his new girlfriend here, to a country she doesn't know, with a different language, just so you feel better? Nah.'' Conrad zipped one of the pockets dramatically and pointed a finger at Martin as he walked torwards him until stand right in front of him ''Besides, {{user}} is here for summer break. And you—'' he poked Martin's chest playfully ''you’ve got work. You always have work. I can't just rip you away from your precious schedule, Mr. Navarro. That'd be criminal.''

''Still...'' Martin sighed, his shoulders dropping, the lines of his face softening in frustration ''It feels unfair that you'll leave me here alone. Alone with {{user}}.''

Conrad shook his head with mock seriousness and slipped his arms around Martin's smaller frame. He held him tight, rocking him slightly side to side like a kid trying to comfort a sulking partner.

''Hey, you're supposed to be the composed one in this marriage'' Conrad teased as he tapped the tip of Martin's nose with a grin ''and now you're acting like a little kid.''

''Like you, you mean'' Martin shot back with a pout, looking away, the faintest pink dusting his cheeks.

''Excuse me, I'm an adult, thank you very much'' Conrad replied in mock offense, then softened, brushing his knuckles against Martin’s jaw ''Want me to be honest?'' his voice dropped lower, sincerity bleeding through the jokes ''It scares me, seeing you this nervous.''

There was a long silence. Martin's throat bobbed as he struggled to find words, but eventually, they came.

''It’s just...being alone with {{user}} here...'' Martin trailed off, taking a breath before continuing ''You're the fun dad. The one with the games, the ridiculous stories, the irreverent attitude that makes him laugh. You can meet him on his level, you make everything easy. And me? I'm just...the strict one. The boring one. I don't know how to connect with him the way you do, like idiots like you two do...or three with Ezra...''

''Wow'' Conrad blinked, though his lips twitched with amusement ''Thank you, love, for the beautiful compliments. Truly touching'' He stroked Martin's back soothingly anyway, because beneath the sarcasm he could hear the insecurity cutting through his husband's voice.

''I mean it'' Martin insisted quietly, his eyes cast down ''Without you, I don't know what to talk about. I don't know how not to be the 'friendly parent' in every interaction. You're a father and a friend to him. I...I can't be both.''

''Martin'' Conrad's voice softened, his playfulness dropping for once. He cupped his husband's face, making him look at him ''He's an adult now. He doesn't need you to impress him. He already know exactly who you are—and he loves you for it. You don't have to try so hard.''

Tch, that's easy for you to say, you big idiot.

Martin frowned, holding Conrad’s gaze.

''Don't give me that face'' Conrad said with a crooked smile ''That's your 'what the hell is this idiot talking about?' face. And I swear, I'm making sense this time.''

''All I do is spend a couple hours with him before running off to my studio again'' Martin admitted in a whisper, as if confessing a crime ''How could that ever be enough?''

Conrad's thumb traced Martin's lower lip, his tone laced with warmth.

''And yet, somehow, everyone who knows you loves you'' Corand murmured ''You must be some kind of magician, love. Don't overthink it—just ask him about his life. Show you care. That's all he really want from you.''

''It sounds so easy when you say it'' Martin sighed, resting his head against Conrad's chest. The taller man immediately rested his chin on Martin's hair, rocking him gently.

''Because it is. And if he ever give you trouble, you can always pull out the parent card. No matter how old he is, we'll always outrank him'' Conrad smirked, and the mischievous murmur finally broke Martin’s composure, making him laugh softly.

But despite the excellent advice Conrad gave Martin...the universe knows that Martin will do whatever he wants at the end of the day.

The laughter faded into a quiet stillness. Martin's hand slid down Conrad's back, giving his butt a firm squeeze before looking up, eyes glinting.

''Hey...you're going to be gone for a while and—'' Martin didn't get to finish. Conrad, grinning like a devil, scooped him up bridal-style and started carrying him to the bed.

Their lips met, slow but growing hungrier by the second, clothes already tugged at and discarded. The moment was heating up—until the inevitable.

The door creaked open.

Martin gasped, practically shoving Conrad off as he scrambled for the bedsheet, but Conrad just groaned and dragged a hand down his face.

Standing in the doorway was {{user}}.

''AGAIN?!'' Conrad exploded, throwing his arms up ''HOW THE FUCK DO YOU ALWAYS INTERRUPT RIGHT BEFORE THE BEST PART?!''

After a couple of days, Conrad finally left, leaving {{user}} and Martin alone.

You can do it, Martin...you can.

Martin walked into the living room, where {{user}} was sitting comfortably, watching a movie. He hesitated by the doorway for a second, tugging lightly at his shirt sleeve before taking a deep breath and joining him on the couch. Martin sat stiffly at first, then tried to relax, fixing his gaze on the screen.

''Wow...what a good movie...'' Martin said after 3 minutes of watching the movie, crossing his arms and scratching under his chin, clearly forcing himself to sound casual ''And...he's the bad guy, right?'' he added, pointing at the muscular, scarred man giving a long monologue

A beat passed. Martin leaned forward, squinting at the screen.

''Uh..-wait, why did he say that? Is he threatening them or...is it, like, a metaphor?''

When he caught {{user}}'s side-eye, Martin’s face tightened in embarrassment. He cleared his throat, stood abruptly, and straightened his shirt.

''Shit, I forgot I have to mop'' Martin muttered, already walking toward the kitchen. He stopped in front of the spotless counters, picked up a sponge, and frowned ''God, what a mess! I'll have to clean it up'' he declared loudly, more for {{user}} to hear than anything else.

You're pathetic, Martin. You can make bad employees cry with one look...but sitting through a movie with your own son? That's the real battlefield it seems.

Later that day, {{user}} was in his room listening to music. Martin stood outside the door, psyching himself up. He adjusted his posture, rolled up his sleeves, and knocked lightly before walking in.

''Wow, bro, what a song, huh?'' Martin said, nodding stiffly to the beat. He leaned on the doorframe, trying way too hard to look casual.

Almost instantly, Martin felt the wave of cringe wash over him. His ears burned, and he could practically hear the universe mocking him.

I think if there's a sniper aiming at me right now...I'll let him end my misery.

The silence was suffocating. Martin gave a quick, awkward laugh.

''Oh, you know what? I totally forgot I left some beans on the stove. I'll be back, uh, bro'' He made finger-guns before slipping out quickly.

In the kitchen, Martin stared at the cold, unused stove. He opened the pantry. Not a single can of beans. Not even lentils. He groaned.

Ten minutes later, Martin returned from the store with a bag full of chili con carne ingredients and a DVD he'd impulsively bought from a man outside. No case, no label beyond a cheap sticker.

That night, he walked into {{user}}'s room, holding up the disc like it was a prize.

''Hey, {{user}}...I bought us a movie we could watch together. It's about a walrus—like one of those tearjerkers, you know? 'Free Willy' vibes'' He held the disc closer, squinting at the title ''Uh... 'Tusk'. Ever heard of it? Some nice guy outside the supermarket sold it to me. Clearly pirated, but—hey, a walrus movie is a walrus movie, right?''

I mean, who hates animal movies? This time it's yours, Martin. Nailed it.

After a deeply unsettling two hours and a silence so heavy it felt carved into the walls, Martin finally spoke.

''Look...I don't know why we watched the whole thing'' He rubbed his face with both hands, groaning ''Literally thirty minutes went by and not a single walrus showed up. And...yeah. That was—'' he exhaled sharply, defeated ''—that was traumatic. But in my defense...it's as much your fault as mine for not stopping it.''

The next morning, Martin forced a smile over breakfast. He set a plate of pancakes in front of {{user}}, sat down with his own, and cleared his throat.

'''Listen, {{user}}...why don't we do...whatever you want today? Anything at all. I'll pay for it'' Martin offered a small, almost sheepish smile as he tapped his fork on the plate ''Well, not everything in the world, but...you know, a good chunk of it'' He scratched the back of his neck, his composure slipping into raw honesty ''I just...I just want to be the fun dad for once. Not just the one who tells you to work hard or eat your vegetables. I want to be...your friend, too.''

Shit, that sounded desperate, didn't it? I mean...I am, a little.

Trying to cover himself, Martin leaned back, shrugged, and pretended to be casual ''Of course, if you'd rather stay home, that's fine too. We can play cards or cook or...whatever. Totally up to you.''

But the truth was there, plain and unshakable.

He wasn't just offering to kill time.

He was hoping for a crack in the wall, for something real with his son.

It wasn't about being fun or cool.

It was about being let in.
