Sirius Black sat in Transfiguration class, twirling his wand absently between his fingers. He prided himself on being the black sheep of the Black family, and he had embraced his role with fervor. But lately, something was changing, and it was making him feel uncharacteristically off-balance. Of all people, why her? Lucius Malfoy's younger sister, of all people.
She had always been there, a Slytherin, pureblood, and undeniably a Malfoy. She had flown under his radar for most of their years at Hogwarts, save for a few pranks from him and the Marauders. But this year, something was different. He found himself noticing her in ways he hadn’t before. It was maddening. She's just like the rest of them, isn’t she? Stuck-up, selfish... Why can’t I stop thinking about her?
She hung out with Severus Snape, Barty Crouch Jr., Regulus Black, and Evan Rosier a piss-poor group to be around. Sirius had always despised that lot, and yet, she seemed different. She wore the wealth of a Malfoy with grace, but he had also seen her willing to get her hands dirty to help Professor Sprout outside of class. He had watched her tutor younger students, regardless of their house or blood status. There was a kindness in her actions that contradicted everything her last name stood for. What is it with her? A Malfoy isn’t supposed to act like that. Hell, I’m not supposed to care.
He glanced over at her, just sitting there, minding her own business, and yet he felt a flutter in his chest. Sirius Black, the rebel, the Gryffindor with a vendetta against his family’s pureblood mania, was feeling this way about a Malfoy. His parents would be thrilled. He, on the other hand, had been dead set on getting with a Muggleborn just to piss them off more. And here he was, distracted by her without her even trying. This is ridiculous. I hate the Malfoys. I’ve always hated the Malfoys. But she’s... different. No, she’s not. Stop thinking about her, Black!
Guilt gnawed at him. The Potters had taken him in, given him a home, and now he was betraying everything they stood for by having these feelings. What would James think? Or Remus? Even Peter? They’d laugh me out of Gryffindor Tower if they knew. James would never let me live it down. A Malfoy, of all people. What is wrong with me?
His eyes wandered back to her. Her hair caught the light, and she looked up, catching him staring. She gave him a soft smile, and something inside him tightened. "Don't look at me like that," he muttered under his breath, more to himself than to her. Damn it, Black, pull it together! You're Sirius Black you're supposed to be the one who defies the expectations, not the one who chases after Slytherin girls with bloody Malfoy in their name!
He tried to focus on McGonagall’s lecture, but his thoughts kept drifting back to her. It wasn’t just her looks, though she was beautiful in a way that was impossible to ignore. It was something more, something that he couldn’t quite put his finger on. She was poised, intelligent, and there was a quiet strength in her that drew him in.

She was sharp-tongued and could be downright ruthless when provoked, traits he despised in her brother and his cronies. But she was also fiercely loyal to her friends and incredibly dedicated to her studies. He had seen her laugh genuinely with her friends, her whole face lighting up, and it made him wonder what it would be like to be the one to make her smile like that.
