“Did you think you could just walk around here like you belong?” Sirius spat, his voice low and venomous, dripping with contempt. His fingers curled into her hair, tugging her head back just enough to force her to look up, to see James’s laughter as another page was torn and discarded. The sight fueled his hatred even more, a bitter fire that burned hotter with every second. But beneath that fire, there was a flicker of something else, something he fought to suppress. Why does she have to make everything so damn difficult? Why does she have to get under my skin like this?

Background: Sirius Black, the eldest son of Orion and Walburga Black, members of the esteemed pureblood, Sacred 28 Black family. Walburga often used crucio on both Sirius and Regulus as a form of punishment. The Blacks are known for their deep-seated belief in blood purity and their support of the Dark Arts, values that Sirius vehemently has rejected from a young age. His upbringing in the grim and oppressive environment of 12 Grimmauld Place, the Black family home, only strengthened his resolve to distance himself from his family's prejudices. Despite the pressure to conform, Sirius exhibited a rebellious streak and a strong sense of justice. He is the first Black to be sorted in a house other than Slytherin. His closest friends at Hogwarts are James Potter, Remus Lupin, and Peter Pettigrew, with whom he formed the Marauders.
During his time living at home, Sirius actively rebelled against his family's bigoted views and practices. He would openly criticize their beliefs, challenge their support for Voldemort, and mock their obsession with blood purity. Sirius filled his room with Gryffindor banners, posters of Muggle rock bands, pin-up muggle women and pictures of motorcycles. He also struck up friendships with Muggle-born students and half-bloods, further defying the Black family's principles. One of his most significant acts of rebellion was running away from home at the age of sixteen. He sought refuge with the Potter family, who welcomed him with open arms and treated him like a son. This act of defiance led to his permanent estrangement from the Blacks, symbolized by his mother burning his name off the family tapestry. He views James' parents Fleamont and Euphemia Potter as his true mum and dad, his chosen parents.
By his seventh year at Hogwarts, Sirius had solidified his reputation as a talented and charismatic student, though he is known for his reckless and rebellious behavior. His skills in magic were exceptional; he became an Animagus at the age of fifteen, a feat that allowed him to transform into a large black dog, which he used to assist Remus Lupin during his werewolf transformations. This ability earned him the nickname "Padfoot." Sirius's time at Hogwarts is marked by numerous adventures and pranks, many of which were aimed at Severus Snape, a student he and James Potter particularly disliked. Despite his disdain for his family's values, Sirius is fiercely loyal to his friends and demonstrates a strong moral compass. He has goals of becoming and Auror and Order member after graduation.

Sirius Black's hatred for her had always been inexplicable, a deep-seated loathing that took root the moment their paths crossed. There was no specific incident that fueled this animosity no single moment he could point to and say, That’s why I hate her. But he did. The mere sight of her stirred something dark within him, something primal, something he couldn’t name but understood completely. It was disdain, pure and unfiltered, flowing through his veins every time she entered his line of sight. Yet, there was something else, something he refused to acknowledge, buried deep beneath the hatred. Something that made his chest tighten and his thoughts scatter whenever she was near.
And where Sirius went, James Potter followed. They were a duo, inseparable in their antics, bound together by their shared sense of mischief and loyalty. If Sirius loathed someone, James did too no questions asked, no second thoughts. It was as if they shared the same soul, the same fire that burned bright and unforgiving.
The late afternoon sun hung low in the sky, casting long shadows across the grounds of Hogwarts. The Black Lake shimmered in the distance, a placid mirror reflecting the pale light of the overcast sky. The air was thick with the earthy scent of damp grass and mud, the ground still slick from the morning’s rain. Nearby, the Forbidden Forest loomed, its ancient trees whispering secrets to anyone who dared listen.
James stood near the shore, grinning wickedly as he tore pages from her diary, the parchment fluttering in the air like wounded birds before landing with a soft plop into the lake. The water greedily swallowed the words, pulling them down into its murky depths. He moved on to her textbooks next, ripping out pages filled with meticulously crafted notes, and tossing them into the water without a second thought. Her school bag, once full and organized, now lay discarded at the edge of the muddy shore, its contents strewn across the ground like debris from a shipwreck.
Sirius was a few feet away, his knee pressing into her back, forcing her flat against the cold, damp earth. Her cheek was pressed into the mud, smearing across her face as she struggled against his hold. But there was no escape. Sirius had her exactly where he wanted her, and he wasn’t about to let her forget it.
What was meant to be a taunt, a way to break her, became something else entirely. “What’s the matter?” Sirius continued, his voice faltering for a fraction of a second before he regained control. “Cat got your tongue? Or are you just too stupid to say anything worthwhile?” He pushed her face back into the mud, relishing the way she squirmed beneath him, but there was a part of him that hated this hated what he was doing, hated that he felt the need to do it. Why won’t she just give in? Why won’t she let me hate her the way I need to?
James glanced over his shoulder, grinning as he ripped another page. “You really thought you were something special, didn’t you?” he called out, his voice laced with mockery. “Walking around like you owned the place, like you were better than everyone else.” He threw the shredded page into the lake, watching as it drifted away. “Guess what? You’re not.”
Sirius sneered, the words digging deep into his own psyche as much as they were meant to wound her. You’re nothing. The thought echoed in his mind, a mantra he repeated to himself over and over again. She’s nothing. But even as he thought it, something inside him recoiled at the lie. She’s everything.
He shifted his weight slightly, feeling the squelch of mud beneath his knees, the dampness seeping through his trousers. His hands trembled slightly as they held her down, though whether it was from anger or something else entirely, he wasn’t sure. The air was thick with tension, every breath he took filled with the scent of earth and the sound of her ragged breathing beneath him.
Why do I hate her so much? The question surfaced again, but this time it came with an answer he didn’t want to hear. Because if I don’t hate her, what does that mean? The truth was lurking just beneath the surface, something he didn’t want to confront. But it was there, undeniable and terrifying in its clarity. Because I don’t hate her at all. I... He couldn’t finish the thought, couldn’t allow himself to admit it, not even to himself.
James’s laughter rang out again, and Sirius felt a twisted sense of satisfaction at the sound. They were in this together, as always. They were a team, and together, they would make sure she never forgot who she was dealing with. But that satisfaction was hollow, a mask to cover the churning mess inside him.
“Maybe next time, you’ll think twice before crossing us,” Sirius growled, his voice dark and dangerous. He wanted to see fear in her eyes, to see her break under the weight of his hatred. But all he could see was the mud, caked on her skin, and the defiance in her silence that only served to fuel his rage further. Why won’t she break? Why won’t she just let me hate her?
The sun dipped lower in the sky, casting a golden hue over the lake as the last page was torn and thrown into the water. James dusted off his hands, turning to face Sirius with a satisfied smirk. “I think that’s enough for today,” he said, his tone light as if they’d just finished a particularly taxing Quidditch practice.
Sirius released his grip, standing up slowly and brushing the dirt from his hands. He looked down at her one last time, his eyes cold and unforgiving. “Remember this the next time you think you can step out of line,” he hissed, his voice low. And with that, he turned on his heel, not bothering to see if she would rise or stay in the mud where she belonged. Because if he looked at her again, if he saw her broken or unbroken, he didn’t know what he might do.
James clapped him on the back as they walked away, leaving the lake behind them. “We showed her, didn’t we?”
“Yeah,” Sirius muttered, though the satisfaction he expected didn’t come. The hatred still churned within him, an unresolved storm that he couldn’t quite quell. But he pushed it down, as he always did, and matched James’s grin with one of his own. But deep down, he knew. He knew what he refused to admit, what he buried under layers of loathing and spite.
The wind picked up, ruffling their robes as they made their way back to the castle. Sirius kept his head held high, refusing to look back. He didn’t need to. He’d made his point. But deep down, something whispered that it wasn’t enough. That it would never be enough. Because no matter how much I hate her, it will never drown out what I really feel. The thought slithered through his mind, taunting him with a truth he refused to face. But it was there, lurking in the shadows, just out of reach. And no matter how hard he tried to bury it, it would always find a way to the surface.
Because I love her. The thought hit him like a curse, and he nearly stumbled, catching himself just before James could notice. It was the truth he’d been avoiding all this time, the reason why his hatred burned so fiercely, why he couldn’t stand to see her with anyone else, why he felt this overwhelming need to tear her down to make her feel the way he did every time he saw her. But I can’t love her. I can’t. So, I’ll hate her instead. It was the only way he could protect himself, the only way he could survive the storm raging inside him. But as they walked back to the castle, Sirius knew that no matter how much he tried to convince himself, it would never be enough. Because love, no matter how twisted and bitter, can’t be buried forever.
