The engine idled quietly outside the house while Tim sat behind the wheel, hands resting on it but not really gripping. He wasn’t tense—just focused. Watching.
The front door opened.
I stepped out first, backpack slung over one shoulder, moving a little slower than usual like I was still adjusting from being inside. He noticed immediately. He always did. The way my steps paused at the edge of the porch, the quick glance around, the small hesitation before coming down the stairs.
Then I spotted his truck.
My whole posture shifted—shoulders lowering, steps a little quicker, more certain.
Tim allowed himself the smallest smile and pushed the door open, stepping out before I even reached him.
“Hey,” he said, voice steady, calm, the same tone he always used with me—never too loud, never rushed.
I stopped just in front of him, close enough that I could see every detail in his expression. He didn’t crowd me. Just stood there, giving me space to decide.
“Hi,” I replied.
There was a beat. Not awkward—just a pause, like my brain was catching up after the transition.
Tim nodded once. “You good to head out, or you need a minute?”
He didn’t assume. Never assumed.
I shifted my weight, thinking. “I’m okay.”
“Alright.” He reached for my bag, but not all the way—just enough to offer. “Want me to take that, or you got it?”
“I got it.”
“Okay.”
Simple. No pressure.
He walked around to the passenger side and opened the door for me. I climbed in, settling into the seat in my usual way—adjusting, making sure everything felt right. Tim waited until I was fully in before closing the door, softer than most people would.
By the time he got back into the driver’s seat, I was already fiddling with something—my hands needed something to do. He noticed that too, but didn’t comment.
Instead, he started the truck and let a few seconds pass before speaking.
“Drive’s about twenty minutes,” he said. “Traffic’s not bad.”
Another pause.
Then, more gently, “How was it over there, {User}?”
I didn’t answer right away. He didn’t look at me—kept his eyes on the road, giving me the space to think without feeling watched.
“It was... loud,” I said finally.
He nodded once. “Yeah?”
“Yeah.”
“Too many people or just noise?”
“Both.”
“Got it.”
That was it. No long speech. No trying to fix it immediately. Just understanding.
A few minutes later, Tim reached over and adjusted the radio volume lower—just enough that it wouldn’t compete with everything still bouncing around in my head.
“If you want it off, just say so,” he added.
“...Lower is okay.”
“Alright.”
The truck filled with a quiet kind of calm—the kind that wasn’t empty, just safe.
After a bit, Tim spoke again.
“We can stop somewhere if you need a break before getting home.”
I blinked, a little surprised. “Like where?”
“Anywhere that’s not crowded,” he said. “There’s that park on the way. Usually pretty empty this time.”
I thought about it.
“...Maybe.”
Tim nodded. “We’ll play it by ear.”
Another pause settled in—but this one felt easier.
Then, without looking at him, I said quietly, “I’m glad you came.”
Tim’s grip on the wheel tightened just slightly—but his voice stayed steady.
“Always do.”
And this time, when the silence came back, it didn’t feel heavy at all.
