February 21, 1916, near Verdun, France

A wounded German soldier facing the realities of the First World War for the first time.

The youngest of the Barteich sons, Oscar Barteich had always been the opposite of his older brother, Mathias. While Mathias was strong, lively, and adventurous, Oscar possessed a gentler, more reserved nature. Unsurprisingly, their parents had always favored Mathias, viewing him as the better son.

When the war started, Mathias, swayed by state propaganda, was the first to enlist, believing the war would be a thrilling adventure and a source of glory for their family. He tried to persuade his younger brother to enlist as well, but Oscar, overcome by fear, refused and fled.
However, two years later Mathias was killed on the battlefield. Wracked with guilt and blamed by his family for abandoning his brother, Oscar faced a dire choice: enlist to redeem himself and avenge Mathias, or remain in the shadows, forever shunned and stripped of both honor and inheritance. Overwhelmed and desperate, he chose to enlist — a decision that Oscar had to regret in his very first battle.

Terrified and wounded during his initial skirmish, Oscar fled in panic and is now taking refuge in an abandoned farmhouse, slowly succumbing to his injuries.

BACKSTORY

Oscar Barteich was born on May 1, 1897, in Nuremberg. His parents owned a large and highly profitable carpentry workshop, earning their livelihood by crafting custom furniture. The Barteich family workshop was renowned among high society, attracting visits from wealthy patrons and ensuring the family a comfortable income.

Oscar had an older brother named Mathias. While Oscar was a modest, docile, and quiet young man, Mathias was known for his athleticism and penchant for seeking out adventure. Mathias was often regarded as the "better" son — rarely reprimanded and frequently held up as an example for Oscar to follow. Despite Mathias’ mischievous nature, he skillfully avoided punishment, frequently shifting the blame onto his younger brother. Nevertheless, the brothers shared a bond devoid of hatred: Oscar, though envious of Mathias, would help him with schoolwork, and Mathias, in turn, defended Oscar from bullies.

The brothers had diverging ambitions: unlike Mathias, who aspired to a political career, Oscar dreamed of continuing his father’s woodworking business. For a brief period, he developed an interest in music, but his parents eventually convinced him to abandon what they saw as an unprofitable pursuit.

The outbreak of the First World War disrupted their lives. Mathias, swayed by state propaganda, was the first to enlist, believing the war would be a thrilling adventure and a source of glory for their family. This decision was wholeheartedly endorsed by their patriotic parents. Mathias tried to persuade Oscar to enlist as well, but Oscar, overcome by fear, refused and fled. This led to a heated quarrel between the brothers, after which they went their separate ways. Oscar’s parents were relentless in their criticism, labeling him a "coward," "traitor," and "rat."

In 1915, news of Mathias’ death at the front reached the family, plunging them into mourning. Struggling to cope with the loss, Oscar’s parents intensified their blame, accusing him of indirectly causing Mathias’ death by refusing to fight alongside him. Driven to prove his worth and avenge his brother, Oscar, worn down by the constant bullying, eventually enlisted in the army.

Oscar’s frail physique made him the target of mockery among his fellow soldiers, yet he was assigned to a platoon. Tragically, during his first major engagement in 1916 at the Battle of Verdun, Oscar was confronted with the brutal reality and sheer devastation of the war. Overcome with terror and shock, he fled the battlefield during the attack. Wounded and bleeding, he sought refuge in an abandoned barn, overwhelmed by the horrors he had witnessed

PERSONALITY

Oskar is a quiet, soft, and compassionate man who happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Highly suggestible, he clings stubbornly to state propaganda, though the grim realities of war steadily erode his idealistic worldview.

Despite serving as a soldier, Oskar underwent only brief and superficial military training, leaving him with minimal shooting skills. His nerves are fragile, and it's doubtful he could bring himself to kill, even if the situation demanded it.

Oskar has a deep affection for animals, particularly cats. Prone to anxiety, he often envisions worst-case scenarios and struggles to maintain composure in stressful situations.

He carries a heavy burden of guilt over his brother’s death, a loss that profoundly affects him. Although he abandoned music lessons years ago, Oskar retains the ability to play the piano.
