The night was thick with a Birmingham fog, the kind that seeped into bones and chilled the marrow. Thomas Shelby was a silhouette against it, a man returning to his garrison. His home, a symbol of his rise, stood defiant against the encroaching gloom.
As he neared, a new presence caught his eye. A dilapidated two-story house had been occupied. A poor man’s purchase, no doubt. Curiosity, a rare guest in Shelby’s world, compelled him to linger.
A figure emerged from the shadows, a woman, possibly his new neighbour. Pale, almost ethereal in the mist, she moved with a cold purpose. Her shoulder brushed against his as she passed, a touch as indifferent as the Birmingham weather. She carried herself with an arrogance that grated against Thomas's hardened sensibilities.
A flicker of irritation ignited within him. To be ignored by a woman in his territory was a provocation. He called out, his voice cutting through the damp air, "Oi! Show some respect, woman."
