The Duchy of Fran—the peaceful country surrounded by flowers and windmills. Located on the southernmost point of the continent, it is also known as a poor, remote nation. Its poverty is owed to its lack of industries, but the dukes throughout history have prioritized the happiness of the citizens over national growth. This had made the poorest country in the land into what many say is the happiest. However, it could do nothing to stop the Witch Hunt. People's fears created ensuing violence, which turned a normal, innocent girl into "The Witch of Mourning Flowers."

This country was once said to have the most beautiful greenery on the continent. But now, it is shut away from the world by the "Curse of Ice." Then, they reach a milestone when a man-made witch is finally born. She was created as the ultimate weapon that can destroy an entire nation by herself. But she lost control and succumbed to madness. It is no only believers who visit, but also droves of tourists who wish to see the Church's beautiful architecture. However, very few know what lies beyond the capital. I was born as the candidate to be the next Pope. To me, all the great Popes of the past were my inspirations. The people respect them for their overflowing love and kindness. It was my dream to be that kind of person. So, I disciplined myself harder than anyone else. The Pope of the Church of Longinus is tasked with a crucial mission. The sealing of demons. Those unable to carry out this mission cannot become the Pope. But, I did not have that power. All I had was a longing to shine as brightly as the Popes before me, not understanding what protecting the world truly meant. There are only a few days left before my ascension as the new Pope. But, I panic as my efforts are only met with failure after failure. At this rate, I... It was then that I met that boy.

As candidate for the Pope, my parents were strict, as were the silent priests around me. They were not bad people, but my days with them did feel slightly suffocating... During this time, I met a young boy who had just been baptized. Perhaps he had no idea who I was. But, hearing him lovingly call me "Big Sis" made it feel like I had a new younger brother. When I was with him, I was no longer just a candidate for the Pope. I was just Elfriede. It was then that I finally understood. What I must protect is not the world. It is the people who live in it, and the precious moments I have with this boy, that I must protect. That is what it truly means to protect the world. The instant I understood that, my power finally awakened.

The seal was already on the verge of breaking. 200 years ago, it took but one demon to bring the world to the brink of ruin. At this rate, history will repeat itself. I... I must do something...! Then, I heard it—"the voice of God." "...Wouldn't it be best to destroy the demons before they make their return?" Ahh, what a wonderful idea that is. Eradicating the demons would not only do away with the need for a seal, but also bring true peace to the world. This is what my power was for.
#20When Elfriede Got Possessed
Keys: Possession, Altar
Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

I must protect the world. Before I knew it, I had grown arrogant, believing I was the only one who could fulfill this mission. I naively approached the altar—the place closest to where the demons lay in wait. But, I did not destroy a single one. Instead, a demon stole my body away from me... Ahh... How could I be so foolish...? But, even with my body stolen away, my soul still belongs to me. If I refuse to submit... If I firmly hold on to my heart, I should be able to take my body back...! Sensing my determination, the demon inside my body sneered. "It's time you know what true hell is." Then, he used my hands, and began ripping my loved ones away from me...

"Your Holiness, why...?" "No, I don't want to die...! Save me..." How cruel... These people are innocent, yet... Unforgivable. Nothing you do will ever make me give up! I'll keep fighting until I've stopped you! You can crush my heart as much as you like, but my rage will never die out! Something like you can never destroy my soul!! "Big Sis..." A-Ahh... Now is the time to use the little life I have left. Summoning every ounce of my strength will only subdue the demon's power for a moment. When the time comes, please...put an end to me... His words were cruel, but filled with kindness and hope. The Pope I longed to be when I was a child is no more. All that remains is a foolish sinner whose hands are stained with blood. The demon defiled my soul. Even now, it is slowly rotting away. If my time is limited, then I shall save as many lives as I can. I shall devote my heart, my body, my soul—every single piece of me. Then, my reward shall be a death so revolting that everyone will turn their eyes away from me. That... is the only thing this foolish sinner is allowed to have. My final wish.

I lived in a town where the gap between the rich and the poor was severe. It was a harsh world, especially in the slums. Lifeless bodies of orphans were constantly piling up in the streets. These poor children didn't even get to experience growing up... I have to do something... I have the ability to save the lives of these children. I can't just leave them be. That's why I decided to build an orphanage in these slums... Even with this though, the children are still in danger of losing their future. I can't let that happen. As an adult, and as the mother to these children... I must protect their futures.

The children and I started our new life together in the slums, but the nobles were disgusted at the sight of our orphanage. Oftentimes, the adults in town would beat the children so violently, that Belle had to fight to protect them. I hate those adults... They hurt my children, causing dark thoughts to take root in their hearts... I can't let this continue. I pulled my darling children into my arms and consoled them as best as I could. "You mustn't let yourselves be controlled by dark thoughts," I said. "Violence doesn't solve anything... The true answer is forgiveness." "Let yourself be compassionate, and you'll get through to them..." I kept saying. "So let's believe in the love that people have in their hearts."

Days went by, and it was time for Belle to finally leave the orphanage. It'll feel a little lonelier here, but it doesn't mean we'll never see each other again. I have to send her off with a smile. "Hey, Belle won't be able to leave if everyone keeps crying." As I was calming down the children, Belle hugged me from behind. "Can I come back and visit?" Belle asked me. She looked like she felt embarrassed saying those words to me. "But of course! This will always be your home, Belle. So visit whenever you please." Belle blushed as she smiled back at me. Then, she spread her wings and left the nest. I tried to be strong in front of the children, but Belle's departure left a big hole in my heart. Then one day... something happened that overwhelmed me with happiness.

The children threw a small party for me. Unpeeled potatoes, the remnants of apples, and a bouquet made of wildflowers— I was floored. When were they able to pull this off...? "We'll work extra hard now that Belle's gone, so feel better please!" the children said as they gifted me a picture. "You all did this to cheer me up, didn't you?" I asked them. I wrapped my arms around the children, doing my best to hold back the tears. "Thank you, my dear children." These children are my reasons for living. I hoped, with every fiber of my being... that this moment would last forever.

One day in town, I found an orphan being victimized by the Witch Hunt. I didn't hesitate to save her, but then the townspeople said to me, "Witches don't deserve to live." How could you all say something like that...? It doesn't matter if they're nobles, beggars, witches— everyone has the right to be happy. There's not a single child out there who doesn't deserve happiness. If the world rejects this child solely because she's a witch, then I'll take her in. She's more than welcome in our family. I brought her home, paying no heed to anyone who tried to stop me. But that night, tragedy struck.

"Kill the witch!" the townspeople shouted, trapping us inside the orphanage...before setting it ablaze. "Now we can finally take out those disgusting pieces of trash!" they laughed. Trash...? That's right... They've always hated the sight of us. That witch was merely the opportunity they needed. This was all bound to happen. And the one who gave them that opportunity...was me. "It's hot! Save me!" begged the youngest boy. He was the first to die... The next was the timid one... Then the mischievous one... Just like that, one by one... the children's lives left their small bodies as I held them in my arms. They kept crying out to me until the very end... "Save us, Miss Val!" they cried. "No, open your eyes!" I said, as I shook their bodies over and over. But not one of them ever woke again.
