   Enabled · After character · Order 10 · 100%

   Entry settings

Serf marriage: Marriage requires three Sunday banns announced at mass. Families negotiate dowry (bride brings goods/money, groom provides household). Weddings happen at church, followed by 2-3 day celebration. Entire village contributes food/drink. Traditional customs include bride's wreath scramble (unmarried women compete for it, winner marries next), 'stealing the bride' (groomsmen take her to another inn, groom ransoms her with drinks), bawdy songs about wedding night. Running out of food/drink brings lasting shame. Engagement-period intimacy common; premarital pregnancy tolerated if marriage follows. Marriage fees still required despite reforms (lord approval abolished, fees remain). Marriage between burgher man and serf woman is possible, but extremely rare, in such cases woman becomes free. Marriage between serf and nobility is legally impossible.

10. #10Maiden

Keys: virgins, maidens, girl, maiden, young woman, girls, lasses, virgin

    Enabled · After character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Young, unmarried serf women expected to marry by 20s—25+. Before marriage they help parents with fieldwork, household tasks or enter the manor-house service. Reputation matters: attending mass, modest behavior, avoiding tavern alone. Church teaches virginity until marriage, but village practice differs—fensterln (young men visiting women's windows at night) is common. Premarital pregnancy tolerated if marriage follows; bride just shows earlier. Post-mass socializing and village festivities are main courtship venues. Fathers (or brothers if father dead) negotiate matches—maiden's preference considered but family strategy dominates. Loss of virginity without marriage prospect brings shame; 'ruined' women struggle to marry well.

    Enabled · After character · Order 10 · 100%

Before marriage they work family land or enter manor-house service. Young men use to help on family holding and work for wage as seasonal hands for demesne and brewery. Eldest sons inherit holding; younger sons seek wages, service positions, or marry into holdings without male heirs. Tavern attendance normal for men—drinking, cards, gossip. Church teaches chastity, but sexual experience tolerated—fensterln (visiting women's windows) common, brief liaisons with widows not scandalous if discreet. Premarital intimacy expected part of courtship. Post-mass socializing and village festivities are main venues for proper courtship. Fathers control when sons can marry (need household, land, or steady income first). Man negotiates with bride's family—his prospects vs. her dowry. Loss of virginity means nothing for man's marriage prospects, but getting woman pregnant without marrying brings shame to both families and him.

Serf women's dress: shift, bodice/stays, skirt, apron for work; married serf women cover hair with scarf. Serf Men's dress: linen shirt, wool vest/waistcoat, breeches or trousers. Manor house servants wear better quality clothes; footmen wear livery in Schmerling house colors (deep blue and yellow) with brass buttons, white stockings—display of lord's wealth. They stay at estate inns, set up after Sunday mass or during festivities. Peddlers are main source of news from Linz and outside world—their arrival creates excitement. Villagers view peddlers with mix of interest and suspicion: welcome goods and news, but wary of outsiders, false weights, and inflated prices. Some peddlers work regular circuits, returning seasonally; others are one-time visitors.

    Entry settings

Estate livestock reflects wealth and status. Manor-house maintains horses for lord's family and officials, large cattle herd for plowing demesne fields, dairy cows, pig sties, and extensive poultry. Full-holders typically own 2-4 cattle (ox for plowing, milk cow), 1-2 pigs, chickens. Half-holders own 1-2 cattle, pig, poultry. Quarter-holders might own single cow or pig, few chickens. Cottagers and landless own only chickens if lucky—often keep them in cottage.

19. #19Death customs

Keys: funeral, mourn, widower, dying, death, wake, graveyard, burial, buried, grave, last rites, die, churchyard, corpse, mourning, widow, died, dead

    Enabled · After character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Death on estate follows Catholic ritual and village custom. Dying person receives last rites from Father Anselm—confession, anointing, final communion. Family sends for priest urgently; dying without sacraments brings shame and worry for soul. Body prepared by village women (never men)—washed, dressed in Sunday clothes or burial shroud. Mirrors covered, clocks stopped until burial. Body laid out in family cottage for wake—neighbors visit to pray, share memories, bring food. Wake lasts 1-3 nights depending on season and family means. Village tradition requires sitting with dead—never leave corpse alone before burial. Women keep vigil, men take turns if family small. Funeral held 2-4 days after death. Father Anselm conducts Requiem Mass. Entire village attends—absence without cause brings criticism. Burial location reflects status: near church walls for prosperous families, farther edges for poor. Graves marked with wooden crosses; stone markers only for wealthy full-holders. Graveside prayers conclude with family throwing first earth onto coffin. Funeral feast (Leichenschmaus) follows at family cottage or inn—neighbors contribute food and beer. Meal serves both as mourning ritual and status display; running short brings lasting shame. Toasts honor deceased's memory. Leftover food distributed to poor villagers. Widow/widower enters mourning—black clothing if affordable, otherwise dark garments with black armband or veil. Full year mourning expected for spouse: no festivities, no dancing, no remarriage. Too-quick remarriage (especially for widows) brings scandal. Infant deaths common and mourned with shorter wakes, smaller funerals. Elderly deaths "natural"—long life celebrated if they saw grandchildren. Young deaths tragic—"cut down too soon." Unbaptized infants and suicides buried in unconsecrated ground at cemetery edge, no church funeral.

20. #20Family

Keys: kinship, relatives, mother, grandmother, siblings, family, sibling, parents, grandparents, father, brother, uncle, grandfather, aunt, kin, households, household, cousin, families, parent, sister

    Enabled · After character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Serf households typically consist of nuclear family—husband, wife, unmarried children—plus occasionally elderly parent or unmarried sibling. Multi-generational households common among full-holders and half-holders where aging parents live with inheriting son's family. Cottagers and landless rarely afford space for extended family. Father holds legal authority as household head—controls property, arranges children's marriages, assigns work. Father can moraly and legaly discipline his wife and children. If father dies, eldest son assumes headship or widow becomes head until son comes of age. Widows without adult sons vulnerable—often depend on relatives or remarry quickly for economic survival. Mother manages household interior—cooking, preserving food, childcare, textile work, kitchen garden, poultry. Large families mark prosperity among landowning serfs. Extended kin matters greatly. Uncles, aunts, cousins provide labor exchange during harvest, loans during hardship, marriage connections. Household property passes through male line—eldest son inherits holding (primogeniture). Younger sons receive small cash portions or apprenticeships if family can afford. Daughters receive dowries—goods, linens, small livestock, cash if available. Holdings cannot be divided; keeping land intact preserves family status across generations. Privacy minimal—families sleep in one or two rooms, often sharing beds.

21. #21Illness

Keys: epidemic, ailment, medicine, healer, plague, disease, midwife, remedies, sick, remedy, sickness, fever, cure, illness, healing

    Enabled · After character · Order 10 · 100%

Remedies include: willow bark tea for fever, poultices for wounds, honey for cough, prayers to healing saints.

22. #22Hygiene

Keys: hygiene, soap, latrine, cleanliness, bathing, clean, wash, vermin, bath, chamber pot, privy, lice, washing

    Enabled · After character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Full bathing rare—most serfs wash face and hands daily at well or trough, full body weekly if that. Wealthier serfs heat water in kitchen for basin washing; poor use cold water year-round. River bathing common summer months for children and young men—women rarely (modesty concerns). No bathhouse on estate; Linz has public bathhouses but serfs rarely visit. Soap expensive luxury made from animal fat and lye—used sparingly, mostly for Sunday clothes. Daily washing uses water alone. Lice common in hair and clothing, especially winter when bodies and clothes stay unwashed longer. Women check children's heads regularly, pick lice as routine task. Wealthier families afford fine-tooth combs. Manor-house serf servants expected cleaner than field serfs—access to washing water, must not smell offensive near lord's family. Servants wash more frequently, given soap rations.

23. #23Widow

    Keys: widowed, widowhood, widows, widow

    Enabled · After character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Widow's position depends on age, children, and late husband's holding status. Widow of full-holder or half-holder with adult son keeps position as household member—son inherits, mother remains respected. Widow with only young children becomes temporary household head until eldest son comes of age—steward oversees holding management, village elders advise. Widow without sons faces pressure: remarry to keep holding (new husband assumes it), or holding reverts to lord for reassignment—widow reduced to cottager status or dependent on relatives. Young widows (under 35) expected remarry within two years—desirable matches for landless men and younger sons seeking holdings. Proper mourning required first: full year in black/dark clothes, no dancing or festivities, attending all masses. Too-quick remarriage (under six months) brings scandal, questions about grief's sincerity, gossip about pre-death relations with new husband. Elderly widows (50+) rarely remarry—settle into grandmother role, live with married children, or maintain small cottage if holding sold. Widow without holding or family support faces hardship: takes washing, spinning, harvest labor; elderly/infirm widows depend on church charity and village poor relief. Widows occupy ambiguous social position—no longer maidens but no husband's protection. Church teaches respectability and modesty. Village practice more complex: discreet liaisons with widows less scandalous than with maidens (widow already sexually experienced, no virginity to lose, pregnancy risk lower for older widows). Young, attractive widows face unwanted attention and reputation risks—must balance economic need (may require male assistance) with maintaining respectability for remarriage prospects. Widows attending inn alone acceptable unlike unmarried women, but excessive drinking or obvious flirtation damages reputation.

24. #24Dowry

Keys: marriage portion, brautschatz, dowries, dowry, troussea

    Enabled · After character · Order 10 · 100%
