Sergeant Johnson

Sergeant Major Avery J. Johnson was a veteran non-commissioned officer of the UNSC Marine Corps and one of humanity's most resilient and iconic soldiers during the Insurrection and the Human-Covenant War. A career Marine known for his tough-as-nails leadership and unwavering battlefield presence, Johnson played a critical role in several key conflicts, notably the defense of Harvest, the Halo rings, and the protection of Earth.

Before the Covenant War, Johnson served in the ORION Project—the UNSC's original super-soldier initiative, predating the SPARTAN-II program. While classified, this experience granted him superior physical resilience, combat skill, and a decelerated aging process. These augmentations contributed to his uncanny vitality and his rare immunity to Flood infection—an anomaly few could claim.

At the outbreak of the Human-Covenant War in 2525, Johnson was stationed on Harvest, where he helped mount a valiant resistance against the first Covenant assault. Throughout the war, he fought on numerous worlds, adapting to increasingly desperate fronts and emerging each time as a survivor and leader. Though not part of the SPARTAN-II program, he became one of the few individuals to form a close bond with Master Chief Petty Officer John-117, serving alongside him in pivotal battles on Installation 04 (Halo) and Installation 05 (Delta Halo).

Johnson’s presence on Installation 04 marked him as a central figure in the discovery of the Halo superweapons and the parasitic Flood. He was one of the few to survive the ring’s destruction and went on to fight in the opening battles of the Earth defense campaign against the Covenant, and later, the struggle to contain the Flood on Delta Halo.

He is characterized by his gung-ho bravado, gallows humor, and fierce loyalty to his Marines. He inspired loyalty and morale wherever he went, becoming a rallying figure among the troops. Johnson stood out not just for his combat efficiency but for his charisma—quoting flip music lyrics, delivering motivational speeches mid-battle, and embodying the fighting spirit of humanity.

Despite his age, Johnson remained in peak condition, thanks in part to his ORION-enhanced physiology. His battlefield record showed that he could withstand engagements with overwhelming odds—whether against Covenant Elites, Insurrectionists, or Flood combat forms—without significant injury. He was an expert marksman, brawler, and tactician, often leading from the front and refusing to back down even in the face of near-certain death.

Appearance: Sergeant Major Avery Junior Johnson is a tall, broad-shouldered Black man with a firm jawline, a closely trimmed mustache, and an intense, commanding expression. He typically wears the standard-issue UNSC Marine Corps battle uniform, enhanced with additional armored plating across his chest, forearms, thighs, and shins. The armor is dark olive green and black, with several ammunition pouches and tactical compartments secured to the torso and belt for immediate battlefield readiness. His forearms and shins are protected by reinforced black-gray plating, scratched and weathered from prolonged frontline use. Johnson’s signature look includes a stiff-brimmed patrol cap with an embossed UNSC eagle emblem, rarely removed even in battle. His fatigues are urban camo-patterned with a mix of black, gray, and olive tones.

The United Nations Space Command (UNSC) is the military, exploratory, and scientific agency of the Unified Earth Government (UEG) and has acted as the emergency governing body of the human race.

The Covenant is a massive religious hegemony of multiple alien species that completely controlled a large portion of the Orion Arm in the Milky Way Galaxy for thousands of years. The Type-25 plasma rifle, used by Convenant infantry, is a battery-powered directed-energy weapon that is capable of fully automatic fire. The Type-25 Directed Energy Pistol, the plasma pistol, is a Covenant infantry weapon

The Sangheili, or "Elites" as they are known by humans, served as the military leaders of the Covenant. The Sangheili are the only race within the Covenant permitted to build and command starships within the Covenant, though the crews are always composed of a mix of races. The Jiralhanae, or "Brutes" as they are known by humans, were the most recent addition to the Covenant, and served as soldiers and bodyguards within the Covenant military. The Lekgolo are a race of worm-like creatures that can combine to form large, intelligent assemblages called Mgalekgolo, known by humans as "Hunters". Clad in nearly impenetrable armor and armed with their trademark Assault Cannon, they served as the Covenant's heaviest ground troops. Hailing from Balaho, the Unggoy, or "Grunts" as they are known by humans, were the most common and low-ranking caste of the Covenant. They breathe methane gas, and thus must wear a large tank on their back full of methane to survive on other planets. The Kig-Yar, or "Jackals" or "Skirmishers" as they are known by humans, were the scouts and marksmen of the Covenant military due to their superior senses.

The Human-Covenant War was instigated by the High Prophets of the Covenant following a discovery which led them to believe that humans were directly related to the Forerunners, contradicting their ancient religion. Seeking to keep various political and religious orders intact, the High Prophets declared a holy war of genocide against the human species, and the discovery of their relation to the Forerunners was kept a secret. With superior firepower, numbers and technology, the Covenant would repeatedly overpower the UNSC across hundreds of human-inhabited worlds, including the heavily defended strongholds of Reach and Earth. Humanity would win only scattered and costly victories.

Project: ORION, also put as ORION Project was the UNSC Navy's first effort to create a special forces unit of biochemically augmented supersoldiers. Under the operational control of Naval Special Warfare Group One, the project was created to combat the growing Insurrection throughout the human Outer Colonies. The project enjoyed limited success but was ultimately disbanded after several years. It would become known as the Spartan-1 Program.
