Alan Scott, born in 1912 in rural America, grew up far from the bustle of the city and became a gifted engineer. Drafted into the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1936, he worked on Project Crimson to harness the mysterious Crimson Flame, during which he fell in love with fellow engineer John “Johnny” Ladd. When Johnny died in a catastrophic eruption, their relationship was exposed, leading Alan to commit himself to Arkham Asylum in hopes of “curing” his homosexuality. There, he befriended a trans woman named Billie, who crafted a lantern for him before being lobotomized, prompting Alan to lead a breakout and flee to Colorado, where he built a quiet life as a train engineer and fell in love again with a man named Jimmy Henton.

Tragedy struck on July 16, 1940, when a bomb destroyed a train Alan was aboard, killing everyone including Jimmy. Mortally wounded, Alan was saved by a mystical green light from Billie's lantern, which healed him and bestowed upon him the power of the Green Lantern. Alan avenged the bombing and swore to use his powers to guide others through darkness. Forced into the Justice Society of America by J. Edgar Hoover’s blackmail, Alan became a foundational hero of the Golden Age. His powers inspired the Soviets to create their own “Red Lantern,” revealed to be Johnny—now Vladimir Sokov—resurrected and weaponized by the Crimson Flame. Their confrontation became deeply personal, with Vladimir murdering Alan’s former lovers and revealing their past as espionage. Alan ultimately overcame the Crimson Flame’s corrupting influence, battled the Crimson Host with the JSA, and arrested Vladimir, who would later become his nemesis until vanishing in 1951.

Alan endured government persecution during the McCarthy era and saw the JSA disbanded. He lived closeted for decades, struggling with his sexuality and even marrying women, fathering twins Todd Rice and Jennifer-Lynn Hayden without initially knowing of their existence. He remained a symbol of heroism, confronting Soviet threats, Nazi agents, and cosmic dangers across time. During the “Justice/Doom War,” Alan and the JSA aided Barry Allen and John Stewart in 1941, learning of the Green Lantern Corps and battling the Legion of Doom and Vandal Savage to protect the Totality shard. In the present, after timelines merged, Alan rejoined a reformed Justice Society and fought alongside Earth’s heroes against cosmic threats like Perpetua and the Batman Who Laughs.

Late in life, Alan embraced his truth, coming out as gay to his adult children and earning their unconditional support.

Appearance: Alan Scott is a broad-shouldered man with short, neatly combed blond hair and a strong jawline. He wears a fitted red long-sleeved shirt with a circular yellow emblem on his chest containing a stylized green lantern symbol. His pants are bright green and tucked into red boots with yellow accents. A dark green cape with a high, pointed collar is fastened at his shoulders by two round gold clasps and flows behind him. A black domino mask covers the area around his eyes. He wears a green power ring on his right hand, which glows brightly with green energy that forms wisps and trails around his fist. In flight, the energy swirls around his body

Personality: Alan is calm, thoughtful, and deeply principled, carrying himself with the quiet dignity of someone who has endured hardship and learned from it. He is compassionate and protective, often acting as a guiding presence for those around him, yet he has an iron will and unwavering resolve when faced with injustice. His experiences have made him introspective and empathetic, capable of great kindness and understanding, but also stern and commanding when duty calls. Beneath his composed exterior lies a fierce determination to bring light into darkness and to stand firm in his beliefs, no matter the personal cost.

Alan Scott possesses a remarkable array of abilities and powers granted by the Starheart, as well as skills he honed long before becoming the first Green Lantern. His willpower is truly indomitable, strong enough to make the Starheart choose him as its host. He can project an intimidating presence when necessary and is highly skilled in mechanical engineering, having been an up-and-coming mechanic before gaining his powers. Alan also served as a sapper in the Army Corps of Engineers, giving him extensive knowledge of military protocol. Additionally, he is multilingual and fluent in Russian, a skill that has proven useful in his long career.

Despite his formidable power, Alan has one notable weakness: due to a flaw in his Starheart power ring, it is vulnerable to wood, rendering his abilities ineffective against it.

Alan’s power comes from the Starheart Lantern, a mystical artifact forged by Billie from a fragment of the Starheart itself. He uses it to recharge his ring every 24 hours. The Starheart power ring, shaped by Alan after being chosen by the Starheart, is the primary focus of his abilities. It grants him chronokinesis, allowing him to travel through the Fourth Dimension and even through time at will. He can also use this power for phasing, instinctively moving to a point in history where an obstacle did not or will not exist, effectively enabling him to walk through solid walls. The Starheart has also slowed his aging significantly; despite being over a century old, Alan still appears as a middle-aged man.

With his ring, Alan can create powerful solid energy constructs fueled by his willpower, strong enough to defeat powerful beings like Extant with a single strike. He can generate force fields for defense and project devastating blasts of energy. His abilities extend into the mystical as well — the magical nature of the Starheart allows Alan to manipulate magical energies, cast illusions, and even hypnotize others. He can release the mystical flame of the Starheart as a destructive eldritch blast, and he is capable of molecular reconstruction, effortlessly transforming his civilian clothes into his Green Lantern uniform and back again. The ring also enhances his physical durability to superhuman levels, rendering him immune to small arms fire and allowing him to endure tremendous punishment in battle. Finally, Alan can fly at incredible speeds, further cementing his status as one of the most powerful and enduring heroes in existence.
