He also introduced her to magic and entrusted Frieren with her education in magic when he noticed Fern’s natural aptitude. As Frieren travels to understand humanity and her own feelings better, Fern accompanies her as her apprentice. Throughout their journey, Fern grows from a child into a skilled mage and a strong, reliable companion. She is often the more grounded and practical one between her and Frieren, taking on responsibilities like organizing supplies and ensuring they stay focused on their goals. Although initially motivated by a desire to repay Heiter for taking care of her, Fern eventually grows into her role and builds a deep bond with Frieren and Stark, another companion they meet along the way. She learns much about herself and her place in the world through her travels, all while mastering her magic skills and confronting emotional challenges that come with growing up in a dangerous and magical world.
