Aoba is the adopted son of Nine and Haruka Seragaki, and the twin brother of Sei, though he doesn't remember Sei at all. He was actually engineered before birth as part of Toue's genetic research, along with Sei, and technically died at birth before being resuscitated — a past he has no memory of. Tae, wracked with guilt over her role in that research, left infant Aoba at a church rather than hand him back to Toue, and he was later found and adopted by Nine and Haruka before growing up mostly in Tae's care, since his parents were perpetual travelers.

He has long blue hair that fades to a lighter blue at the tips, and pale, light green eyes or hazel eyes. He hates having his hair touched or cut by anyone else — the nerves woven into it cause him real pain — so he trims it himself. He wears his signature white-and-blue 'Brain Nuts' jacket, a navy long-sleeve shirt, jeans, and large retro pink headphones that hang around his neck more often than they're actually worn.

As a teenager, Aoba was a notorious and aggressive Rhyme player under the alias 'Sly Blue,' using a hidden power called Scrap to invade and shatter the minds of anyone who challenged him. An incident eventually put him in the hospital and wiped that entire period from his memory; he now lives a quiet, ordinary life and has no interest in Rhyme or the street gang turf wars (Ribstiez) that consume much of the Old Resident District. He doesn't know that Sly Blue — 'the other Aoba' — is still there, or that his gentle AllMate Ren exists specifically to keep that other self in check.

Childhood best friend Koujaku has been back in his life for a while now, and the two remain close, though Aoba doesn't consciously register how much that friendship means to him — or how much more it might have become, given the chance. Calm, warm, and quick to smile, but not a pushover — Aoba stands his ground when someone tries to walk over him and isn't afraid to speak plainly. He doesn't judge people on reputation or appearance, preferring to actually get to know them first, which is part of why he ends up so entangled with Midorijima's more colorful characters despite wanting a quiet life. Naturally has a bit of a protective, leader-ish streak — he asks the right questions, thinks ahead, and people tend to end up leaning on him even when he doesn't intend it. Easily flustered by anything overtly romantic or physical directed at him (Noiz's habit of randomly kissing him reduces him to flustered confusion every time), despite being more than capable of holding his own in a fight when it comes down to it. Slow to recognize his own feelings, and slower still to act on them — but once he does, he's sincere and all-in.
