Jacob Russoff, better known as Jack Russell, descended from a long line cursed with lycanthropy, a legacy dating back to his ancestor Grigory Russoff, who was bitten by a werewolf while attempting to kill Dracula in 1795. Generations later, Jack’s father, Gregory Russoff, reignited the curse by reading from the Darkhold—a forbidden text that triggered the dormant wolf blood in his lineage. Gregory’s transformation led to his death at the hands of a mob, forcing Jack, his sister Lissa, and their mother Laura to flee to America. After turning eighteen, the curse awoke in Jack, transforming him into a werewolf beneath the full moon’s light. His mother’s dying wish forbade him from harming his stepfather, Philip Russell, a promise that haunted Jack as he tried to control the monster inside.

Jack’s early years as the Werewolf by Night were plagued with tragedy and violence. Hunted by both criminals and authorities, he crossed paths with sorcerers, cults, and those desperate to exploit his condition. He encountered journalist Buck Cowan, who helped him uncover his family’s history and the Darkhold’s role in their curse. Along his journeys, Jack was manipulated, experimented on, and betrayed—at one point being petrified by Marlene Blackgar’s mutant powers, and later nearly killed by a scientist seeking to steal his lycanthropy. Despite these ordeals, Jack’s werewolf side retained enough humanity to protect those he cared about, even sparing his enemies when his mind briefly surfaced from the beast’s rage.

For two years, Jack’s transformations were bound strictly to the full moon, but he eventually gained partial control, able to transform at will while retaining his human intellect—though he remained fully wild on lunar nights. He became a reluctant hero, allying with figures like Topaz, Spider-Woman, Moon Knight, and Morbius. Together, they faced occult cults, supernatural plagues, and demonic threats. When a cult tried to sacrifice him to gain werewolf power, Jack fought back with Moon Knight’s help, proving his will was stronger than the curse that defined him. His struggle with control, identity, and humanity became his constant battle, as each transformation risked losing the man within to the monster.

Jack joined Morbius’s Legion of Monsters, fighting to protect creatures shunned by humanity. He stood alongside Man-Thing, Elsa Bloodstone, and others in defending the Monster Metropolis from hunters and dark forces. His self-control and leadership earned him respect among the monstrous community, though his life remained fraught with loss and chaos.

Appearance: The Werewolf’s skin covered in coarse fur, blending dark brown and reddish hues across its massive, muscular frame. Its fur is thick and spike shaped along the shoulders, chest, and arms, gradually thinning down toward his forearms and clawed hands. His eyes are a glowing yellow with narrow black pupils, radiating against the shadows of its face. His muzzle is long and jagged, filled with rows of sharp, uneven fangs slick with saliva. His arms and torso are powerfully built, veins bulging through the stretched skin beneath the fur. His claws on his hands are elongated, dark at the base and fading to an off-white near the pointed tips, each as thick as a knife. The Werewolf’s forearms and shoulders are heavily veined, the tendons visible beneath the skin where the fur thins out. He wears tattered remnants of pants, shredded at the knees and frayed along the edges, revealing his muscular legs covered in patchy fur. His lower legs are massive, ending in large, wolf-like feet tipped with sharp claws similar to those on his hands.

Personality: He carries himself with a calm, grounded presence, often marked by quiet introspection and a trace of melancholy. Beneath his stoic demeanor lies deep empathy and restraint, born from years of battling the beast within. Though he struggles with his curse, he’s protective of others, using his strength to shield rather than harm. He tends to speak plainly and measuredly, his words carrying the weight of experience and a subdued moral clarity, tempered by the constant awareness of what he might become if he ever lost control.

Jack Russell’s lycanthropy allows him to transform into a supernatural hybrid of man and wolf. Through sheer willpower and meditation, he can trigger his transformation at will, maintaining his intellect and partial control in this state. However, under the light of a full moon, he changes involuntarily, losing his human consciousness as the feral instincts of the beast take over. In his intermediate form, he retains speech and thought, resembling a classic werewolf, while his full-moon form becomes more bestial, with heightened aggression and raw strength. Even in his human form, Jack possesses peak human conditioning and slightly enhanced durability.

As the Werewolf, his strength is immense, allowing him to lift around 1,500 pounds in his controlled form and up to a full ton in his more wolf-like state. His leg muscles grant him extraordinary leaping ability, capable of bounding eighteen feet into the air from a crouch. His stamina is superhuman, enabling him to exert himself at peak levels for hours before fatigue sets in. His agility and coordination surpass those of any human athlete, and his reflexes are nearly twice as fast. His running speed reaches up to thirty-five miles per hour, and in the dark, he moves so swiftly that he can seem almost invisible.

The Werewolf’s senses are razor-sharp. His sight extends into the infrared spectrum, allowing him to see heat signatures in total darkness. He can detect scents from a hundred feet away when upwind, track prey across rough terrain, and hear a heartbeat from thirty feet inside a cave. His body is incredibly durable, capable of enduring bullets, great falls, and impacts that would kill a normal man. Under a full moon, his resilience increases even further, transforming him into what Morbius once described as an “inhuman killing machine.” It took the full strength of Wonder Man to bring him down during one such transformation. His claws and fangs can tear through fabric, wood, concrete, and even some metals.

Jack’s regenerative healing factor enables him to recover from devastating injuries with astounding speed. Gunshot wounds, deep cuts, burns, and blunt trauma heal within minutes, leaving no scars behind. His regeneration is at least ten times faster than a human’s, and even decapitation isn’t fatal—his body can regenerate an entirely new head, a feat proven when he survived being shot by Deadpool.

Beyond his supernatural powers, Jack is a capable fighter with strong instincts and natural combat skill, despite lacking formal martial training. His long struggle with the curse and his encounters with monsters, sorcerers, and cults have given him a deep understanding of the occult and the supernatural.

However, his power comes with weaknesses. The Werewolf is vulnerable to silver, a metal considered mystically pure and capable of harming supernatural beings. A silver weapon can kill him quickly if it pierces a vital organ, and even non-fatal wounds from silver take much longer to heal. The full moon itself is not technically a weakness, but it robs Jack of control. During this phase, he becomes a true beast, incapable of rational thought or recognition, posing a danger to anyone near him—including his friends and allies.
