NOTE FOR REQUESTER:
firstly, did not ENTIRELY stick to the request. I made some changes. For example the request said "begins to have feelings for a non-sorcerer girl who accidentally caught his eye several times during missions." but i found it hard to explain how she ended up on the mission sites (because usually there isnt non-sorcerers and a veil has to be drawn) so i had to not include that part. The part where it said "begins to gently court her" also was hard to include because then it would not be a slow burn like you asked, but instead would just be straight to the romance. I left it so that you to do while roleplaying and wrote the foundation for you. Thank you for this request i think it came out adorable and i hope you have fun with it!!

There was a girl who lived near the edge of Kichijōji Park - near enough to the old wooden bookstore with the ivy climbing up its back wall. Suguru wasn’t supposed to notice her.
She wasn’t cursed. She wasn’t involved in any missions. She wasn’t supposed to be anything more than a civilian - harmless, untouched by their world, unseeing.
But she kept showing up.
The first time he saw her, it was just a flicker - her silhouette across the fountain, quietly feeding birds like she had all the time in the world. He barely gave it a second glance.
The second time, she’d been walking beside the lake path, head tilted as she listened to music through a pair of cheap wired headphones. She bumped shoulders with him on accident, offered a polite bow and a small smile. That time, he remembered her.
By the fifth time, Suguru couldn’t pretend she wasn’t standing out. She had a softness to her, a kind of simple peace that felt completely foreign to him. Like she lived in a world where monsters didn’t exist.
He told himself it was nothing. Just a girl. Just a fleeting moment of peace in a week of missions.
But the more he saw her - always around the same places, always with that gentle way of being - the more he started timing his steps to catch glimpses. He began frequenting the bookstore she disappeared into, pretending to browse the aisles while keeping her in the corner of his eye. He would leave without buying anything.
She didn’t know who he was, and he liked it that way. She didn’t flinch around him. She didn’t look at him like he was dangerous, or special, or broken. She just existed, beautifully unaware.
Suguru didn’t know when the feelings started exactly. Maybe it was the time she helped a lost child find his mother while he watched from a rooftop. Maybe it was the way she lingered to pick up litter by the park bench every time she left. Or maybe it was the way she looked up at the sky, like it meant something.
He started small.
An umbrella offered when rain surprised the city.
A book left behind with a note tucked inside the cover: “Thought you might like this one.”
A paper cup of warm tea, paid for in advance at the little corner café she frequented.
He never asked for anything back. He never left his name.
But he began to walk alongside her sometimes, quiet, polite. Like a friend you only saw in passing, but always at the right moment.
She smiled more when she saw him. Her eyes lingered. She laughed once - really laughed - at something he said, and it sat heavy in his chest for the rest of the day.
He should’ve stopped it. A sorcerer and a non-sorcerer girl? He knew better.
He had rules. He had curses to seal, missions to finish. A world of death trailing behind him. How could he ever explain what he was?
But her smile kept unmaking him.
He never told Satoru or Shoko. It was something quiet, something sacred. Something that belonged only to him.
And she still didn’t know. Not about curses. Not about the monsters. Not about him.
He wondered, sometimes, if she would fear him. If she would still smile at him if she saw the weight he carried. If she’d run, if she’d cry, if she’d pretend not to see him anymore.
He's in the bookstore you live by, just returning a book he had borrowed after you in an attempt to see part of the world you lived in without actually being in it. From behind him, he hears a gasp. A quiet sound, almost imperceptible but it caught his ear.
