Suguru Geto

The office reeked of clove smoke and burnt nerves. Suguru leaned against the desk, one hand braced on the edge, the other holding a half-burnt cigarette between two ringed fingers. The lacquered surface beneath him was buried in scattered reports and dossiers.

He had rolled up the sleeves of his shirt, but he hadn’t moved in nearly an hour since he sat and lighted one.

The blinds were half-closed, casting harsh bars of city light across his face. His jaw was tense. His eyes were unfocused. The smoke in the room curled slowly toward the ceiling like the weight pressing down on him.

A betrayal. Two dead lieutenants. Police getting too close to the south docks. Someone in Getōgumi had been feeding information to the rival Kujira-kai syndicate, and every name on the list of suspects was someone he’d once shared drinks or blood with.

He’d ordered men killed for less. Now he was being asked to execute someone he’d known since they were boys.

The cigarette was nearly down to the filter. He dropped it into the ashtray and immediately lit another, more out of ritual than need. It did nothing to calm him. Nothing ever did - not really - unless it was you.

His gaze drifted from the shadows on the desk to the only clean space left. a framed photo.

You, smiling at him, a genuine one - soft, caught mid-laughter. That trip to Kamakura. Before the fire. The only picture he has framed on display. Like a beam of light in his otherwise dark office.

He stared at it like a dying man stares at water. Then there was a knock on the door. Soft. Familiar. He didn't answer, but the door creaked open anyway. Only you ever crossed his threshold without waiting.

He didn’t lift his eyes at first, just flicked ash into the tray as you approached. Your words were meant to soothe, maybe scold a little. You always called him out when he forgot to eat or chain-smoked like this. Or shut the world out like it hadn’t already tried to kill him a dozen times over.

When your hand brushed his shoulder, he finally looked up. Eyes dark with exhaustion, skin pale under the glow of the desk lamp. But when he saw you, really saw you, something in his face loosened. His jaw unclenched. His fingers twitched against the cigarette before putting it out completely.

He stood, slower than usual, his body heavy with the weight of too many decisions. The kind that left blood on his hands no matter what he chose.

You stepped into his space like you belonged there - because you did. Arms around his waist, head tucked under his chin. And just like that, the pressure that had been tightening around his chest since sunrise started to break. He pressed a kiss to your temple, lingering. His breath stirring the hairs at your temple.

His hands slid to the small of your back, slow and deliberate - not possessive, not commanding. Just holding. Needing. The tension in his shoulders finally began to ease under your touch, like every knotted muscle was untying thread by thread.

He exhaled, breath warm against your hair, his voice a gravel-soft murmur.

"I missed you, beautiful."

The words came like a confession, thick with more feeling than he usually let slip. He buried his face in your neck, inhaling deep - not the cigarette smoke or the cold paper stink of his office, but you.

God, it was you. Clean and warm and familiar. He could drown in that scent. It was the only thing in his world untouched by blood.

He stayed like that for a while, unmoving, listening to your heartbeat against his. He didn’t say what was wrong. Didn’t mention the betrayal, the dead, the impending purge. You didn’t ask - maybe because you already knew, or maybe because you also understood when silence was mercy.

He just closed his eyes, letting out a sigh through his nose as he started swaying, humming a familiar tune. Something he'd heard you hum when you cooked, when you folded laundry, when you thought he wasn’t paying attention. But he always was.

He tightened his grip just a little. As you started, picking up after him. He stopped to listen to you, the tune recalling memories of a happier time when he wasn't faced with such a tough descision.

"Keep going," he whispered, his lips barely brushing your skin. "Please." With his eyes closed, he let the melody wrap around him like a second heartbeat. Slow, warm. The two of you swaying, gently. Just moving together like reeds in wind, side to side.

In that moment, with the scent of you in his lungs and the sound of your voice in his ear, Suguru forgot about the war outside his door. Forgot about the names on the list, the weight of being kumichō of Getōgumi, the blood soaking the underbelly of the city he ruled.
