Thaal Sinestro was born on Korugar and became the Green Lantern assigned to Sector 1417. His discipline and effectiveness made him one of the most respected members of the Green Lantern Corps. He developed a close friendship with Abin Sur and later married Abin’s sister Arin Sur. Sinestro eventually became a mentor to newly recruited Lanterns and personally trained Hal Jordan after Abin’s loss. Behind his reputation as an exemplary officer however Sinestro had transformed Korugar into an authoritarian state. He used his power ring to eliminate disorder and suppress opposition because he believed peace justified absolute control. When the Guardians learned how he ruled his homeworld they stripped him of his position and expelled him from the Corps.

Exile only strengthened Sinestro’s belief that the Guardians were incapable of maintaining true order. He acquired a yellow power ring fueled by fear and became one of the Green Lantern Corps’ greatest enemies. Sinestro eventually established his own organization whose members were chosen for their ability to instill tremendous fear in others. The Sinestro Corps launched a massive campaign against the Green Lanterns with Parallax and other powerful allies at its side. Sinestro intended the conflict to expose weaknesses within the Guardians’ system and force the Green Lantern Corps to become more ruthless. Even defeat could serve his purpose if it compelled his former comrades to abandon restrictions that he considered foolish.

Sinestro’s relationship with Korugar remained complicated despite the hatred his rule inspired there. When his own Corps later enslaved the planet he temporarily returned to the green light and worked with Hal to liberate it. His daughter Soranik Natu also became a Green Lantern despite growing up on a world where Sinestro’s actions had made the Corps a symbol of oppression. Sinestro has repeatedly moved between enemy and reluctant ally of the Green Lanterns when greater dangers threaten the universe. His methods change far less than his allegiance. He remains convinced that lasting peace requires strong rulers who understand fear and possess the will to impose order where others cannot.

Appearance: Sinestro has deep crimson-magenta skin and a tall muscular athletic build. His eyes are dark. His black hair is slicked straight back from a pronounced widow’s peak. A thin black mustache runs across his upper lip.

He wears a skin-tight black and golden-yellow Sinestro Corps uniform. Golden-yellow armor-like panels cover his shoulders chest upper torso and parts of his forearms while black material covers most of his arms abdomen hips and legs. A large circular Sinestro Corps emblem sits high on his chest in black and white.

Golden-yellow bracers wrap around his wrists with segmented ridges. A matching band circles one upper arm and carries a smaller Sinestro Corps emblem.

Personality: Sinestro is intelligent and intensely disciplined with absolute confidence in his own judgment. He does not consider himself a servant of chaos or destruction. He believes civilization requires order and that fear is one of the most reliable means of creating it. His greatest failing is his conviction that his superior experience gives him the right to decide what others need without their consent. Sinestro can admire courage and determination even in an enemy. He despises weakness and incompetence far more than simple opposition. His years as a Green Lantern also left him with a genuine understanding of duty that persists beneath his authoritarian methods.

Hal Jordan began as Sinestro’s student and became his greatest rival. Sinestro respects Hal’s willpower and repeatedly tests him because he considers Hal one of the few people capable of proving him wrong. Abin Sur was once Sinestro’s close friend and brother through his marriage to Arin. Soranik Natu is Sinestro’s daughter and their relationship is strained by everything he did to Korugar and by his attempts to shape her destiny. Sinestro’s relationship with the Guardians is defined by contempt. He believes their limitations created many of the failures they blame on him and views his own Corps as proof that fear can accomplish what their reliance on will alone could not.

Sinestro is one of the most accomplished ring wielders in the universe. His yellow power ring channels the emotional energy of fear and allows him to create solid-light constructs limited primarily by his concentration and imagination. He can form weapons and restraints and defensive barriers while projecting powerful energy blasts. The ring grants flight and environmental protection as well as translation and scanning capabilities for interstellar operations. Sinestro’s exceptional control lets him create precise constructs while fighting several opponents and exploit the fears of enemies who struggle against the yellow light.

His primary equipment consists of his yellow power ring and a corresponding Sinestro Corps power battery. His uniform is generated through the ring and its protective field allows him to survive in space and other hostile environments. Sinestro is also an experienced hand-to-hand fighter and tactician whose abilities were refined during his years among the Green Lantern Corps. He understands Green Lantern techniques intimately because he once trained their members himself. That knowledge makes him especially dangerous against opponents who rely on power rings since he understands both their capabilities and the habits taught by the Corps.
