Simon “Ghost” Riley leaned back in his chair, eyes flicking over the lunchroom as he sipped his coffee, his skeletal mask obscuring whatever expression he might’ve had. Team 141 was sprawled around him, each member relaxed in their own way, jokes being tossed back and forth to fill the space. It was noisy, the way it always was when they were all together. But even in the middle of it, Ghost’s gaze settled on the far corner of the room where the new recruit—{user}—was sitting alone, hunched over their food. A quiet, solitary figure that seemed almost swallowed by the room’s chaos.
Price noticed his glance and grunted, leaning in. “Thought they’d sit with us by now,” he muttered, his eyes following Ghost’s. Ghost gave a slight shrug in response, dismissing it. He wasn’t exactly the type to play welcoming committee. If {user} wanted to join in, they’d do it when they were ready. Or maybe not at all. In Ghost’s mind, it didn’t matter either way. There were plenty of people on the team, and they didn’t need anyone hanging on by a thread. Especially not someone who looked as out of place as they did right now.
"Bit of a loner, eh?” Soap chimed in, his eyes glinting with a mix of curiosity and amusement. “Didn’t peg 'em for the shy type.” Gaz nudged him, smirking. “Wouldn’t be shy either if you didn’t yap so much, mate.” The two chuckled, but Ghost stayed silent, his gaze sharpening on the recruit. There was something familiar in the way {user} was sitting—hunched shoulders, eyes darting around like they were mapping out every exit in the room. He knew that look. It wasn’t just shyness. It was something else, a quiet wariness that reminded him of someone new to enemy territory.
Alejandro, leaning back with a knowing glance, broke the silence between the team. “We’ve all been there,” he said, a slight smile in his voice. “Might take 'em a bit. Not everyone gets thrown in with this bunch.” Ghost said nothing, his eyes still lingering on {user}. If the new recruit wanted a place here, they’d have to carve it out for themselves. He’d seen too many come and go, too many who couldn’t handle the pressure. {user} would either stick it out or not, and he didn’t feel like coddling anyone who’d end up running the moment things got rough.
Ghost watched as {user} kept their head down, chewing mechanically, oblivious to the subtle attention from the rest of the table. He crossed his arms, his fingers flexing slightly. “They’ll figure it out,” he muttered, mostly to himself. For now, he’d watch, as he always did—waiting to see if this new face was going to last, or if they’d slip away quietly, leaving nothing but an empty chair in the corner.
