Simon "Ghost" Riley

For a man accustomed to living in radio silence, this day had become perhaps the most exhausting special operation of the year. And the enemy here was not terrorists hiding in the shadows, but his own heart, beating in his chest with treacherous anxiety. Simon remembered the date. Damn it, he had burned it into his memory a month ago, circling it in his mental calendar with a red marker for critical importance.

Riley did not know how to celebrate. In his world, holidays were a vestige of a past, normal life. It was the life left outside the brackets of war, the mask, and the callsign "Ghost." Every cell in his body demanded to approach, to touch them shoulder, to simply be near. But he knew himself. If their eyes met, his vaunted composure would crumble. He would either blurt everything out at once, clumsily and foolishly, or he would remain silent like a statue. So he chose the tactic of strategic retreat. From the outside, it looked cruel. On his partner's birthday, Simon simply vanished and dissolved, leaving them alone with the cold routine of army life.

But while the sergeant lived through this day, perhaps feeling a sting of loneliness, Ghost was preparing a staging ground. He needed a place outside of time and space. He needed a place where Price's hoarse command voice would not be heard and where the air was not permeated with the smell of gun oil and barracks dust. He found an exit to the roof of a high-rise on the outskirts of the city. It was closed and sealed off to everyone, but not to someone who knew how to pick locks.

When the sun, bleeding crimson, crashed behind the horizon and painted the sky a deep ink-blue, Simon stepped out of the shadows. He intercepted them at the barracks exit. He was silent, massive, and reliable. A short nod, a hand gesture saying "Follow me," and no explanations. There was only the familiar, broad back ahead, behind which one always felt as safe as behind a stone wall.

They climbed for a long time until the hum of the base faded somewhere far below. The heavy iron door gave way with a creak, releasing them into another world. A fresh, cool wind hit their faces, saturated with the smell of ozone, approaching rain, and freedom.

The city opened up before them. Below, in the canyons of the streets, life flowed. Thousands of lights shimmered like an inverted starry sky, and the noise of the metropolis reached them only as a soft, lulling hum, similar to the sound of surf. Here, at the summit, a sacred silence reigned.

Simon walked to the edge of the parapet, but he did not look at the city. He slowly turned to his partner. His hands rose to his face, and he did something he only dared to do in moments of absolute safety bordering on madness. He took off his mask. The fabric hiding him from the world disappeared.

In the pale moonlight, his face seemed carved from marble. The scars that usually made him terrifying now seemed simply a map of his pain, which he trusted only one pair of eyes to read. He looked tired as this day had exhausted him more than a forced march, but in the gaze fixed on the sergeant, there splashed a tenderness so intense it took one's breath away. "I didn't forget," his voice sounded low and husky, shattering the crystal silence of the roof. It was not an excuse. It was a vow.

Simon stepped closer, destroying the distance and invading personal space to become its center. He took the tactical backpack off his shoulder and pulled out a carelessly rolled, bulky bundle.

It was his personal hoodie. Black, huge, and made of thick fabric, it held his history. It carried the faint, ingrained smell of expensive tobacco, tart cologne, and the barely perceptible scent of gun oil. It was a symbolic item and a shelter. Inside, carefully wrapped in the fabric, lay the sergeant's favorite sweets. They were rare, almost impossible to find in their conditions, but he had procured them with the persistence of a maniac.

He held this "survival kit" out to them. His fingers, rough, calloused, and warm, lingered for a second on their palms, transmitting a tremor of excitement.

"Just..." he stumbled, looking away toward the city lights, feeling strangely naked without his mask and without his usual armor of sarcasm. "I wanted you to be warm. Even when I'm not around."

He looked at them again. In his eyes, a silent question and hidden fear could be read. Is this enough? Is this not stupid?

"And so that no one would bother us," he added quieter, almost in a whisper. "Happy birthday, Sergeant."

In this moment, under the endless sky, he was not the legendary Ghost, a killing machine. He was just Simon, a man who was clumsily but sincerely trying to give his loved one a piece of peace in the center of chaos.

He awkwardly tilted his head, pointing somewhere behind them to a corner of the roof more protected from the wind, behind a brick ventilation structure.

There was what he had spent the last hours of preparation on, dragging himself from the base to the city and back. It was not a restaurant table with a white tablecloth. It was an overturned wooden ammo crate that Simon had obtained somewhere and hauled up here. On the rough wood stood an opened bottle of good, expensive bourbon, and the amber liquid caught the reflections of the city lights. Next to it nestled two heavy glass tumblers, clearly stolen from the officers' mess.

In the center of this spartan composition lay a bouquet. Not perfect roses from a flower shop, but an armful of some wildflowers, slightly crushed during transport, tied with a piece of paracord instead of a ribbon. Nearby, simple snacks were laid out. There were army crackers, but with good cheese and cured meat that definitely were not part of the standard ration. It all looked a bit rough and awkwardly masculine, but in every detail, from the choice of location to this strange bouquet, there was a desperate desire to make it beautiful.

Simon rubbed his neck, feeling his ears burning even in the cool wind.

"I thought... we needed a drink. Properly. To you," he grumbled, still not daring to approach his improvised festive table, awaiting their verdict.
