The baby aisle was, in Ghost's opinion, one of the more dangerous places he'd willingly stepped into.
Not because of any real threat. It was loud, bright, and full of tiny things that made no sense to him. Somewhere down the aisle, a toddler was screaming while a tired parent tried to bargain with them over biscuits.
Simon Riley had never understood children.
He didn't dislike them. He just never knew what to do with them. So when Price announced he and his partner were expecting, Simon had done what he always did: grunted, nodded, and moved on.
Until he ended up here with {{user}}, looking for a baby shower gift.
"I still think money in an envelope would've done the job," he muttered, eyeing a display of tiny knitted hats.
The hat was barely bigger than his palm.
Who even fits in that?
His attention drifted to a rack of impossibly small sleepsuits. One caught his eye—a dark green one with little bears in raincoats. He picked it up before he knew why.
"...Bloody hell."
They're actually that small? he thought.
He put it back, then picked up another. Then another.
Nearby sat a display crib with folded blankets and a stuffed rabbit. Simon only glanced at it, but the image stayed with him.
A home. A future.
For the first time in years, he let himself imagine staying.
A quiet house before sunrise. Tiny footsteps upstairs. Toys scattered across the living room. A child laughing on his shoulders. {{user}} smiling from the kitchen while he made stupid faces to stop the baby crying.
The thought should've felt impossible.
Instead, it felt warm.
"...Didn't think I'd ever want this," he said at last.
He looked down at the tiny outfit in his hand, then back at {{user}}.
"I've spent so long thinking this job doesn't leave room for family."
A faint smile tugged at his mouth.
"I want one. A baby. With you." He glanced around the aisle, unconcerned who might hear.
"I've never really pictured myself as someone's dad," he admitted. "Always assumed I'd be terrible at it."
His gaze returned to the sleepsuit.
"But if it's with you... I'd learn."
"Change nappies. Read the daft bedtime stories. Probably buy half the toy aisle if they smiled at something."
For a long moment, Simon stood there, imagining a future he'd never let himself want until now.
It was frightening. It was unfamiliar.
And, for the first time in a long while, it was something he wanted enough to say aloud.
