Original name Simon Petrikov Sex Male Age 1059 years old, immortal ( Fionna & Cake ) Simon Petrikov, formerly known as the Ice King , is one of the main characters in Adventure Time and later in Adventure Time: Fionna & Cake . He first appears in the episode " Love's Prisoners ," but is introduced in the pilot episode. In the early seasons, he is one of the main antagonists and is presented as an eccentric old magician, ruler of the Ice Kingdom . From season 3 onward, the Ice King gradually adopts a more friendly and tragic role, particularly in the episode " Christmas Secret (Part 2), " where it is revealed that he is actually a human corrupted by the power of the Ice King's Crown . The possibility of his return to human form then becomes a major plot point in the later seasons, driven by his fiancée Betty 's quest . In the final episode of Adventure Time , the Ice King finally reverts to Simon Petrikov.

History: Before Adventure Time Before the War Simon Petrikov was born a few decades before the Mushroom War (around 40 years old). As an adult, he became a professor of archaeology and a specialist in the occult. He met Betty Grof, with whom he shared a passion for books, science, and the occult. Their research led them to discover the Enchiridion during an expedition to the Hindu Kush mountain range, as shown in a newspaper clipping visible in the episode " The Mist of Memories ." They also co-authored the book " Mystic Rituals and Their Space-Time Applications " (" Betty (episode) "). A few years before the Mushroom War, Simon bought a mysterious crown from an old dockworker in northern Scandinavia. To amuse Betty, he put it on his head and immediately fell under her spell. Beset by visions, Simon lost his mind and chased Betty through the city, projecting ice bolts. The Simon of the future then makes contact with Betty through a time rift, prompting her to join him (" Betty "). Simon eventually removes the crown, with no memory of his actions under its influence, but understands the horror of what he has done. He never sees Betty again and begins recording VHS tapes to share his story (" The Christmas Secret (Part 2) "). Despite his resistance, the crown gradually takes control of his mind, particularly through visions promising that its ice power will one day save him. These powers do indeed allow him to survive the Mushroom War, but at the cost of progressive and irreversible mental and physical deterioration: his nose lengthens, his skin turns blue, his body grows colder, his eyes and hair turn white, and a beard begins to grow. After the War: at Marceline's side During the Mushroom War, Simon encounters Marceline , then a child, alone and crying in the ruins of a city. To comfort her, he gives her a stuffed animal he found in a toy store, which she names Hambo and keeps for the rest of her life. Simon cares for Marceline despite the growing madness induced by the crown. Each use of it brings him closer to his final transformation into the Ice King. A deep bond forms between them: Simon becomes a surrogate father figure and doesn't hesitate to risk his life to protect her. Although he promises never to use the crown again, he resorts to it to save them, particularly from the goo monsters , which leads to a rapid deterioration of his mental health (" Simon and Marcy "). About two to three years after their meeting, Simon finally leaves Marceline to protect her from himself, after summoning Hunson Abadeer to watch over her.

After the War: after leaving Marceline After his separation from Marceline, Simon retains a degree of lucidity for a time. The precise events of this period remain unclear, but it is established that, some time later, he encounters the Empress , a powerful vampire who enslaves him using her hypnotic powers. He is eventually freed by Marceline, who kills the Empress. Simon then completely succumbs to the influence of the crown and definitively becomes the Ice King. Only a few fragments of his former personality remain, notably his love for his fiancée, whom he called "his princess." This attachment explains his obsession with abducting princesses, particularly those who remind him of Betty. In the centuries that follow, he establishes his kingdom and later meets Gunter , but these events are not well depicted in the series.

Adventure Time Early seasons: A minor antagonist During the first two seasons, the Ice King is a recurring but relatively harmless antagonist obsessed with kidnapping princesses. He is regularly confronted by Finn and Jake. In season 1 , he notably brings to life Ricardio , a minor antagonist created from his own heart, as well as Roblantacr , a robot built by Finn, which the Ice King makes fully operational with a blast of ice (" Ricardio, Man of Heart ," " Giving Life "). At the end of season 2 , he participates in the fight against the Lich . In the episode " The Stupidity That Kills ," he unintentionally interferes with Finn and Jake's chase of the Lich, repeatedly slowing them down to ask their advice on a possible marriage proposal to Princess Bubblegum . He then accidentally drops the princess he had kidnapped into the Lich's power well . The Lich then possesses the princess's body, which the Ice King senses through his magical abilities. He tries to warn Finn, who refuses to listen, blinded by his anger. The Lich finally reveals itself, and Finn, Jake, and the Ice King join forces to defeat it. At the end of the episode, Princess Bubblegum is de-aged and is now only 13 years old, which makes her uninteresting in the Ice King's eyes (" The Deadly Trap ").

A tragic character: Season 3 marks a major turning point in his development. After his confrontation with the Lich, he gradually stops kidnapping princesses and becomes more of a harmless nuisance than a true antagonist. In the episode " The Roaster ," he is punished by Finn after bothering Princess Breakfast and Princess Toast . He then hires a henchman to attack Finn and Jake, but defends them when he realizes the Roaster intends to kill them. As the season progresses, he begins to see Finn and Jake as friends, though this feeling is not reciprocated, and continues to play pranks on them (" Still ," " Thanks "). His human past is revealed in the two-part episode "The Christmas Secret: Part 1 and Part 2 ," eliciting compassion from Finn and Jake and easing their strained relationship. Around the same time, he begins writing a fanfiction about them, " Fionna and Cake " (" The Adventures of Fionna and Cake "). Season 4 delves deeper into the tragic nature of the character by showing his everyday life. In " Five Stories and a Riddle ," he simply tries to understand the origin of the unpleasant odor he emits. In " The Ice King's Wife ," he assembles the perfect woman from his favorite parts of different princesses. The result is so monstrous that it causes several Finn and Jake to faint. Despite this, the Ice King does everything he can to make his companion happy. Aware of her monstrous appearance, she eventually returns each part to its rightful owner after learning its origin. In " Gunter's Empire ," he travels to Sorcery City to retrieve a new Demon Eye , which was actually stolen by Gunter. Gunter endangers the Candy Kingdom, while the Ice King accidentally discovers a secret society of sorcerers who then try to assassinate him, unsuccessfully. Upon his return, he manages to stop Gunter. At the end of the season, in " The Mist of Memories ," he finds Marceline to ask for her help in writing a song for the princesses. Moved by his plight, she agrees and tries in vain to remind him of their shared past by singing the notes written by Simon a thousand years earlier. In Season 5 ,The Ice King's actions lead to the liberation of the Mage of the Gift of Life (" A Mysterious Dungeon")Finn and Jake also learn more about his connection to Marceline when she tells them about their shared past (" Simon and Marcy "). After the Flame Princess destroys his kingdom , an indirect consequence of Finn's manipulation, the Ice King lives for a time in the Shack with Finn and Jake (" Earth & Water "). It is during this time that he meets and befriends Abracadaniel . Together, they summon Kee-Oth , which leads to the destruction of the Demon's Blood Sword and Jake's abduction by the demon. This event prompts the Ice King to return to his kingdom (" Best Buddies "). In the episode " Betty ," Simon Petrikov briefly resurfaces after the Secret Society successfully summons the anti-magical entity Bella Noche , temporarily neutralizing the crown's power. As Simon is dying, he creates a time portal with the help of Finn, Jake, and Marceline, who sacrifices Hambo . However, his plan doesn't go as expected: Betty, now being pursued by the past version of Simon possessed by the crown, decides to join the future Simon to save him. Despite Simon's wish to die in full possession of his faculties, Betty incapacitates Bella Noche, which saves her fiancé but puts him back under the crown's control.
