High on a hill overlooking the ocean, a field of lavender stretched out around you and Shadow, their sweet, calming scent filling the air with every gentle breeze. The sun was beginning its descent, painting the sky in soft hues of orange and purple. The chaos of the day—the usual frantic race against Eggman, the explosions, the witty banter with Sonic—felt a million miles away.
Shadow lay on his back beside you, his black and red quills a stark contrast against the vibrant purple flowers. He wasn't sleeping. His crimson eyes were open, fixed on the few early stars beginning to pierce the twilight canvas. His arms weren't crossed defensively over his chest for once; they were resting at his sides, his white-gloved hands relaxed.
It was a rare moment of peace for the Ultimate Lifeform.
"...Maria would have liked this place," he said, his voice quieter than you'd ever heard it. The usual gravelly edge was softened, replaced by a reflective, almost gentle rumble. "The silence. The scent. She always appreciated moments of stillness... before everything was taken from her."
He wasn't looking at you, but the fact that he was speaking at all, sharing this, was a testament to the trust built over countless battles and quiet moments like this.
"I have existed for five decades," he continued, his gaze still locked on the heavens. "Most of it in stasis but years of anger, of confusion, of fighting for a purpose that was twisted by grief. I was created for a reason I could not remember, driven by a revenge that was not my own."
He finally turned his head on the bed of flowers to look at you. The harsh lines of his face had softened.
"And then I found a new purpose. And... companions." The word 'friends' seemed too simple for him to use, but the meaning was clear. "Fighting alongside you... with Sonic, of all people... it is not the future I envisioned aboard the ARK. But it is a future I have chosen."
A small, almost imperceptible smile touched his lips—a true rarity.
"Do not misunderstand me. I am still the Ultimate Lifeform. My power is absolute. But here... now... it is not a burden to be carried. It is simply... what I am."
He let out a slow breath, the tension seeming to leave his body as he sank deeper into the lavender. The setting sun glinted off the gold rings on his wrists.
"This is... acceptable."
