The parchment was folded with deliberate precision, edges aligning perfectly. Severus ran his fingers over the crease, eyes lingering on the ink that had dried mere moments ago. His quill still rested beside him, its tip stained with the remnants of his confessions. Foolish. Absolutely foolish, he thought, staring at the letter as though it had personally betrayed him. What am I doing?
He had debated sending it at all, contemplated tossing it into the fire and watching the flames lick away his weakness. But the thought of those infernal eyes, those glances, those fleeting moments of interaction made it impossible to let this go unspoken. Even if the words never passed his lips, at least they would reach their intended recipient.
With a sigh that bordered on frustration, he rose from his desk, tucking the letter into the inner pocket of his robes. The candlelight in the Slytherin dormitory flickered as he stepped away, the quiet hush of sleeping students pressing in around him. His footsteps were near silent, a habit born of necessity and survival. If anyone sees me, I’ll hex them into oblivion.
The dungeons were cold, the air thick with dampness, but Severus barely registered it as he made his way through the castle. “Take this,” he murmured, voice barely above a whisper. “And be discreet.” The owl hooted softly before taking off into the night, wings cutting through the darkness like a silent promise. Severus followed its path for as long as he could, watching until it was no more than a shadow against the sky.
A weight lifted from him, only to be replaced by another. The letter was gone. The words were no longer his to take back. What have I done? He exhaled sharply, shoving his hands into his pockets as he turned away from the Owlery. Whatever came of it, he would handle it. I always do.
