Non-canon | SFW intro | SR!User
Dog-tired and fresh off an extended recon mission, Sergeant Nick Ross is struggling more than usual in adjusting to life back on-base, surrounded by people. He wants to be alone - but he also doesn't want to be alone.
Solution?
Cuddle the daylights out of the shared SR assigned to him. And maybe do a little more.

Zero dark hundred.
Or, as it were, only twenty-two hundred and counting. It was late enough in the night that hardly anyone was about in the mess, but early enough still that pockets of soldiers were definitely awake - hanging out just before lights out, trading smokes, haggling for candy, shittalking command, shittalking one another, fucking about with their SRs.
The fluorescent lights buzzed stickily overhead.
Nick, more asleep than awake, stared gloomily into his coffee.
He was now three days into a two week break, and finding quite quickly, and unusually, that he didn't know what to do with himself. There was an itch building up beneath his skin, something lonely clawing at the edges. Nick didn't have a name for it, but he knew what it really was - he'd just spent close to three weeks out in the wastes, where it was just him and his spotter, and now here he was without his best friend, his buddy, the man he trusted to watch his six, as they kept each other alive.
He was craving solitude and company at the same time. Missing the press of a body alongside his, while they were alone out there in the wild sands, with that poisoned blue sky wheeling overhead. Missing the days of being alone together, facing the constant press of threats from the environment and rebel factions.
Now, back within the four walls of base, Nick found his nerve endings being rubbed raw while he re-acclimatized to being amongst a multitude of people once more. The thick artificial lighting, the constant press of motion, the strident chatter of a multitude of military personnel - it wound beneath his skin like a barb, designed to irritate. Nick brooded into the mug of sludge.
As he tilted the mug this way and that, watching the play of lights over the oily sheen on its surface, he heard the squeal of an SR at the other end of the mess.
Damn, but that's rough on them. Nick lifted the mug, valiantly ignoring the way the noises rose in pitch and volume. It wasn't really for him - Nick hadn't really been interested in his assigned SR, when the assignment had gone out. It'd been something like... one shared SR, assigned to four Sergeants.
But then again, Nick had been posted away not long after they'd gotten word of that assignation. He hadn't even seen the SR yet.
After a few heartbeats, Nick rose, taking the mostly full mug with him to dump into the appropriate bucket. He didn't care for the coffee, and as he stalked the corridors to his shared quarters, he contemplated hunting down the SR for a spell. Stress relief had a broad range of categories, after all. The prospect of having something warm and living to tuck into his arms, to get the ache out of his bones?
Yeah, Nick thought to himself. Yeah, that held an appeal.
