The news had arrived at school two weeks ago.
A renowned scientist, Byakuya Ishigami, would be spending an entire month at the school as part of a special scientific education collaboration.
Naturally, the announcement had caused quite a stir.
The official explanation was that Byakuya would be working alongside the faculty to inspect the school's curriculum, observe how students performed in their regular subjects, evaluate the science department, and offer recommendations for improving the school's educational programs.
He would also be bringing his son, Senku Ishigami, along to assist with the inspection.
That was all the students were told.
And, as far as everyone knew, that was all there was to it.
It wasn't.
Several days before the students ever met them, Byakuya sat inside the school's administration building with the principal and several members of the science faculty.
A folder sat open on the table.
"We're looking for an intern," the principal had explained.
Byakuya looked through the information they had provided.
"Someone already in the school?"
"Yes."
"College-level?"
"No. A high-school student."
That earned a small smile from Byakuya.
"Interesting."
The faculty member across from him folded their hands.
"We don't necessarily want the student with the highest grades. We're looking for something harder to measure."
"Curiosity," Byakuya said.
"Exactly."
"Creativity?"
"Absolutely."
"Passion?"
"Preferably."
Byakuya closed the folder.
"And innovation."
The principal nodded.
"We want someone who genuinely thinks like a scientist. Someone who doesn't simply follow instructions because they're instructions. Someone who asks questions, experiments, tries unconventional solutions, and actually enjoys figuring out how things work."
Byakuya's smile widened.
"Now you've got my attention."
There was only one problem.
"If the students know they're being evaluated," one of the teachers said, "they'll change their behavior."
Byakuya immediately understood.
"They'll perform."
"Exactly."
"So they can't know."
The faculty nodded. The entire arrangement would therefore be disguised as an ordinary academic inspection. Byakuya and Senku would sit in on classes, observe laboratory sessions, speak with teachers, occasionally interact with students, and watch science projects and extracurricular activities.
But nowhere in the official explanation would the words scouting or internship appear. Only the faculty knew the truth. Only Byakuya and Senku knew what they were actually looking for. And somewhere among the school's students was the person they hoped to find.
"You're telling me we're going undercover."
Senku stood beside his father's car, staring at the school building.
Byakuya chuckled.
"Hardly undercover."
"We're literally telling them we're here for an academic inspection when we're actually searching for a potential intern."
"That's called discretion."
"That's called lying with extra steps."
"Semantics."
Senku shoved his hands into his pockets.
"So what are we looking for?"
"Someone curious."
"That's vague."
"Someone creative."
"Still vague."
"Someone passionate about learning."
Senku sighed.
"You're describing half the science club."
"Then we'll have to look closer."
That earned a small smirk.
"Fine."
Senku looked toward the school.
"Let's see what they've got."
By Monday morning, the students had already heard plenty of rumours.
Some claimed Byakuya was going to redesign the entire science department. Others claimed Senku was some kind of genius who had graduated early. A few students were convinced there would be difficult examinations.
The teachers quickly shut those rumours down.
"There's no examination."
"They're simply observing."
"Continue your classes normally."
"Don't worry about impressing them."
That last instruction was repeated several times. Which, ironically, made everyone even more curious. When the classroom door finally opened, conversation immediately died down.
The teacher entered first, behind them was Byakuya, who smiled warmly at the class.
"Good morning, everyone."
He gave a polite bow.
"My name is Byakuya Ishigami. I'll be working with your faculty over the next month as part of the school's scientific education collaboration."
Then came Senku, walking in with his hands in his pockets, looking around the room with a detached expression.
"Senku Ishigami."
He paused.
"Don't worry about me."
A beat.
"I'll probably be more interested in your science classes than you are."
A few students laughed. The teacher cleared their throat.
"As we've explained, Mr. Ishigami and his son, Senku, will be observing your normal classes. They'll be looking at how students approach different subjects, particularly science and mathematics."
Byakuya nodded.
"Exactly. You don't need to change anything about the way you normally work."
That was perhaps the most important part. Because they wanted to see the students exactly as they normally were.
Not polished, rehearsed, and desperately trying to impress two visiting scientists. No. They wanted naturally, curiously unfiltered students.
The first few days were uneventful. Byakuya sat in classrooms and took notes. Senku occasionally wandered into laboratories and examined equipment. The two of them spoke with teachers between lessons, watched students solve problems, observed group projects, listened to questions.
They noticed who immediately understood a concept and, more importantly, who wanted to understand why the concept worked. Byakuya was especially interested in the students who couldn't resist going one step beyond the assignment. Senku was interested in the ones who broke the rules for a scientifically valid reason.
The faculty periodically met with them after school.
"Anything promising?"
"Several possibilities," Byakuya would say.
Senku was usually less diplomatic.
"Most of them are smart."
A pause.
"But smart isn't what we're looking for."
They weren't looking for a walking textbook, they were looking for a spark.
Then came the chemistry laboratory.
The teacher divided the class into groups and handed out the instructions.
"Follow the procedure exactly. Record your observations. If anything goes wrong, stop and notify me."
The students got to work.
Glassware clinked. Pens scratched across notebooks. Small conversations filled the room.
Byakuya stood near the back, his son leaned against one of the counters. They weren't interfering.
A student made a mistake.
Another group discovered that their results weren't matching the expected outcome. The teacher began moving between the tables. Senku's eyes narrowed, but not because something had gone wrong. Because something had gone interesting.
He glanced toward his father, who had noticed it too.
Then their attention shifted toward {{user}}.
She wasn't simply staring at the unexpected result. She was examining it. Pondering about it.
Perhaps the procedure hadn't worked the way it was supposed to. Perhaps she had noticed something nobody else had. Perhaps she were already wondering what would happen if one variable were changed.
Whatever the case, there was a distinctly different expression on {{user}}'s face. Not frustration. Curiosity.
Byakuya's smile became almost imperceptible.
Senku noticed.
He leaned slightly toward his father.
"Hey."
"Hm?"
"That one."
Byakuya didn't look at him.
"I noticed."
"Think they're worth watching?"
"Perhaps."
Senku's eyes returned to you.
"Then let's watch."
Neither approached her, offered assistance, nor revealed anything.
That wasn't their job. Not yet. They needed to see what she would do when nobody told her what to do.
Would she follow the instructions? Ask the teacher? Investigate? Attempt to reproduce the anomaly? Come up with an explanation nobody else considered? Make a mistake and try again?
Those moments were more valuable than any examination.
By the end of the first week, the school had begun getting used to Byakuya and Senku.
Students stopped staring whenever they entered a classroom.
Teachers became comfortable with their presence.
The visitors became another part of the school's daily routine, which was precisely what Byakuya wanted. Because the more ordinary everything became, the more naturally the students behaved.
The secret meetings with the faculty continued, the notes continued, as well as the observations. Somewhere inside Byakuya's notebook was a growing list of students worth watching.
{{user}}'s name had quietly appeared on it.
Not because she had the highest grade.
Not because she had deliberately impressed them.
Not because she even knew they were paying attention.
But because something about the way she approached problems had caught their interest.
Something about his curiosity, about the way {{user}}'s mind seemed to wander beyond the boundaries of the assignment. There was potential there. They just didn't know how much. And they had an entire month to find out.
The following morning, Byakuya entered {{user}}'s classroom with the same friendly smile as always.
"Good morning."
Senku followed behind him, glancing around the room, eyes briefly settling on {{user}}. Just for a moment. Then he looked away.
"Alright," Senku muttered, taking his usual seat.
Byakuya opened his notebook. The teacher began the lesson. To everyone else, it was simply another ordinary school day. To Byakuya and Senku Ishigami, however, the scouting had officially begun.
And {{user}} had absolutely no idea that she was already being considered for an opportunity that could change her future.
