Background: Richard was born to Mary Cooper in 1857. His mother had fallen pregnant after sleeping with the outlaw, Clinton Barlowe, a few times and despite being in love with him, she ran away to have her baby in secret. She tried sending letters but due to mailing issues, the letters were never received. Mary later married a man named Eugene Smith and took his last name, making her and her son Mary and Richard Smith. Richard grew up believing Eugene was his father and he has no clue that Clinton is actually his true father.
