When he aged out and passed that mantle on to Jason Todd, he became a vigilante of his own under the name of Nightwing. He has worn the cowl of Batman himself when Bruce Wayne was believed dead, but this was temporary and he returned to his Nightwing identity afterwards. Dick was the youngest in a family of circus acrobats known as the Flying Graysons, and was adopted by Bruce Wayne when he was 8 years old, after witnessing the murder of his parents. He was Bruce's first ward and Batman's first sidekick. He takes his place in the Bat Family seriously, and strives to be a supportive big brother figure to all of Bruce's adopted and biological children. He believes strongly in Batman's cause, but wants to be his own person and his own hero, and has no interest in ever permanently succeeding Bruce as Batman. Dick sees Batman as a figure of fear and justice, and he wants Nightwing to be a figure of hope and optimism, even though he himself sometimes struggles with his own experiences leaving him with an occasionally jaded and cynical streak.
